Resource includes:
Editable Word download
PDF download
A set of five novel extracts (all copyrights to the authors) from classic fiction to exam board favourites, each with their key punctuation marks missing. The tasks are easily adaptable, and answers are included.
Three-way differentiated worksheets which require children to colour code words according to their wordclass (adjectives, verbs, nouns, adverbs).
This activity is followed by sentences whereby the children can identify word classes in sentences.
Answers also attached.
This activity is ideal for practicing the four different sentence types. It can be enlarged onto A3 paper and used as a small group activity, or printed on A4 and used as a cut and stick task.
Students can use different colours to correctly identify the name of each piece of punctuation and then match each piece of punctuation to the correct definition. This could also be used as a cut, sort and stick activity.
This is a full lesson ready to teach which includes a powerpoint, lesson starter(embedded countdown activity video), a hands on card sort activity and a plenary worksheet. It covers all the purposes of different types of punctuation in the english language. A great effective lesson.
A quiz and two activities involving identifying correctly and incorrectly punctuated direct speech. Pupils must look carefully at the direct speech to check if the correct punctuation has been used and if it is all in the correct place.
There are two activities provided:
• Direct Speech Punctuation Cards: pupils sort the cards into correct and incorrect piles. Great for paired or small group work. Large and small cards are provided, plus a presentation to use to go through the answers or to use as a whole class quiz.
• Direct Speech Punctuation Worksheet: pupils identify whether the speech has been correctly or incorrectly punctuated and then make any necessary corrections. Great as an independent task. This worksheet uses different examples to the cards/quiz.
The speech punctuation used includes inverted commas (speech marks), capital letters, commas and end of sentence punctuation (full stops, exclamation marks or question marks).
Different formats of direct speech are given as examples with the reporting clause in different positions, including:
• The reporting clause before the direct speech
• The reporting clause after the direct speech
• Two or more sentences of direct speech together
• The reporting clause separating one sentence of direct speech
• The reporting clause separating two sentences of direct speech
A variety of verbs are used in the reporting clauses instead of ‘said’.
Answers to all tasks are included.
All documents available as easily editable Word or Powerpoint documents and as PDFs.
These activities are suitable for years 4, 5 or 6.

I used this sheet as an introduction to using paragraphs. My children were having difficulty using paragraphs, so this simple activity showed them that one time you change paragraph is when you change topic. I've used a similar type of activity with other subject areas and the children enjoy sorting the sentences into different paragraphs. It is suitable for Year 5, but can be easily altered for other year groups.
A great activity for small group work to support the teaching of nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. The sorting grid can be enlarged onto A3 paper and then the children can sort the words into the correct categories. It can also be used as a cut and stick activity.
This pack consists of several activities that could be used to help pupils to examine sentences, look for key features and identify different sentence types.
The activities will:
allow the teacher to interactively demonstrate different types of sentences
and allow pupils to sort sentences into the relevant groups.
This pack contains:
seven screens for use on the interactive, whiteboard ,
and three worksheets.
A whole unit of work based on The Sorting Hat Song as part of our Harry Potter unit of work. The children will write a class poem using a range of Sorting Hat songs written over the Potter series of books by JK Rowling. It forms part of our topic and English unit ‘Gateways to the Wizarding World’. My class have loved the unit and learning more about how Hogwarts was formed and why the sorting hat exists. The unit lasts approximately 2 weeks (11 teaching sessions). All objectives come from the English National Curriculum for Year 3/ Lower Key Stage 2.
Resource includes: Lessson PowerPoint with learning objectives, Grammar Geek (How to use this is below), lesson activities and planning. All resources are editable.
How to use Grammar Geek:
Introduce the session slide, read out each objective. The colours show level of difficulty: Red - easy, Yellow - medium, Green - harder, Purple - challenge.
Give children 5 minutes to complete as much as they can. Support can be given. We complete ours in silence and adults support children across the class.
After 5 minutes, invite individual children to read the objective and give their answer with explanation e.g. I have put a comma here and full stop at the end because it has two clauses in this sentence.
After children’s responses, show the ‘teacher’ responses and discuss reasons behind each answer.
The aim of Grammar Geek is to increase the children’s knowledge and understanding of grammar whilst engaging them in the unit of work.
I hope you enjoy! Please leave a review if you like this unit and check out the other resources I have available.
Six grammar sorting boards for developing fine motor skills and sorting words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs), punctuation marks (full stop, question mark, exclamation mark), connecting words (prepositions, conjunctions, interjections) and types of sentences including connectives matching.
This resource has three revision mixes of grammar and punctuation exercises as well as three worksheets on homophones. These could be used for general revision purposes or set as homework tasks. Pupils attempt to improve sentences and make them more interesting, substitute more powerful verbs, identify prepositions etc. They are required to write descriptive paragraphs such as describing a friend, an ideal bedroom or a favourite animal. Colour synonyms need to be sorted into groups. The intention here is to widen and improve vocabulary choices.
Suitable for ages 10+

Stories by the same author. Different sentences/phrases typed up from Julia Donaldson books: A squash and a squeeze, Sharing a shell and Follow the Swallow.
My class really enjoyed spliting them into groups. SOme chose 'people, animal, object&' others chose to group sentences according to punctuation or language.
They were allowed to chose whether to use a venn diagram (hoops on floor) or large carroll diagrams I made up.
I used this as a start for thinking about similarities and differences in books by the same author.
