Welcome to the World of Civics.
This is a 4-6 week transdisciplinary unit study with the theme of How We Organise Ourselves. Using the idea of what it means to be a citizen in the world, we inquire into the central idea and how leaders have governed world citizens over time.
The summative assessment has an emphasis on action through raising awareness of issues and how, we, as a group united with common goals and just means, can educate others in order to create change. The lessons are suggestions as to how you could use the materials and resources created. Everything is aligned with the IB PYP phases 3 & 4 and the CCSS standards for 5th grade.
Central idea: Interconnectedness of human
structures can impact society’s perspective and promote or deny social justice
and equal opportunities.
Lines of inquiry:
Different forms of governing systems
Human rights and social justice
Responsibilities of governments and leaders.
Reading skills and strategies: close reading, annotating, inferring, predicting, cause and effect.
Personal narrative writing
Collaborative group work
Math: critical thinking and problem solving, data analysis, geometry
