I have been a successful head of Design and Technology in a challenging high school since 2001. I personally deliver Edxcel BTEC Engineering and GCSE Graphics, Product Design and WJEC Food and Nutrition. I am very proficient in IT and use my skills in this area to produce engaging and easy to follow lessons. Through my lessons I have achieved and average of 80% of my pupils achieving a level 2 qualification in a school with a an average 30% level 2 pass rate over.

This introduction to the Unit 2 Assignment 1 covers the basic and advanced technical specifications for an engineered product.

The whole unit will focus on an engineered product. In this case a pair of tin snip, which not the most exciting product but will allow learners to use the product in an engineering context and most departments should have some old and new ones that pupils can compare. Btec advisors state the product should be accessible and have at least 2 materials and component parts. I have tried game controllers, sketboards etc but a simple handtool is the most effective and there are plenty of resources available for them!

The lessons includes
Learning objectives
Thinking points
Tasks - Written, group work, independent learning homework

The next powerpoint in the series of lessons will introduce the properties of materials used in a pair of tin snips that will enable learners to achieve the target criteria for learning aim B.

It may not cover all aspects that you are required to teach during the GLH but hopefully will start you off on a good basis to move forward.

The reason this product was chosen is so you can fulfil all the requirements of each assignment.
The product has to have 2 component parts.
The product should be accessible to students.
Pupils should be able to talk about:
The technical specifications and performance of the product – Form, function, User Requirements, performance requirements, ease of manufacture/ease of maintenance/ law and safety requirements.
The materials and components used in making the product and alternatives – Chromium molybdenum alloy/steel and rubber/
The manufacturing process of 2 components of the product
The quality issues relating to the product during and after manufacture.
