A KS3 (Y8) lesson on problems that migrants face when moving from the Middle East to Europe, mainly as refugees. It starts with a simple match-up of key migration terms, then moving onto Lee’s Migration Model. Pupils fill out this sheet while listening to a BBC podcast (link on PowerPoint) about a girl who tries to travel from Syria to the USA. They then analyse the newspaper sources in pairs and write a letter to a newspaper to express their views on refugees compared to the newspaper’s.
This is the first lesson of two, with the next lesson named ‘Risking It All’ based on refugees escaping persecution, but instead the pupils putting themselves into a refugees shoes and making an escape route. I found that my pupils enjoyed both lessons and I would recommend these lessons for any abilities.
