French: 30 Dictées in the Past Tense
A tried and true method for improving your French! Here are 30 Dictées in the past tense in the form of riddles: ten Dictées in the ‘passé composé’ using ‘avoir’, ten in the ‘passé composé’ using both ‘avoir’ and ‘être’ and ten using the ‘imparfait’. Guess which sport or activity someone is doing in the first section. In the second, guess where someone went, and in the third, guess what was happening.

All major vocabulary is translated after each Dictée, and can be used in a separate quiz. Detailed instructions for getting the most out this type of exercise are included (in English).

You will find ten riddles for the following activities:

Playing ball, swimming, skiing, playing tennis, playing tag, going cycling, going sledding, playing soccer, playing hockey, going hiking

. . . ten riddles for the following places to go:

To the beach, apple picking, in a boat, to a party, to the market, in the wild, to Paris, in the desert, to a concert, to the library

. . . and ten riddles to answer the question ‘what was happening?’:

A winter storm, taking an airplane, making a cake, enjoying nature, writing a story, a spring rain shower, learning to play an instrument, dreaming of being a soccer player, walking the dog, gardening.
