A fun art activity for your students when celebrating the Māori New Year.

Colour, cut and join together.

There are 6 different star quilts. One of the images above shows all 6 designs.

Four students work together to create an art piece. Each student has one of the four different templates for one of the designs. For example, templates A1, A2, A3 and A4 are used to create Design A. The templates are all clearly labelled.

Students can choose who they work with, or you can hand the templates out randomly and they find the 3 other people who have the sheets that they need to complete the square.

Colouring Ideas:
♦ Symmetrical colouring
♦ Warm / cool colours
♦ Winter colours
♦ Everyone in the group must have the same colour pattern (or not)
♦ Free choice colouring - the individual or group can decide

Key Competencies:
♦ Relating to others – listens actively, recognises different points of view, negotiates, shares ideas, etc.
♦ Managing self – makes plans, manages projects, time management, etc.
♦ Participating and contributing – contributes appropriately as a group member, makes connections with others, creates opportunities for others in the group, etc.
♦ Thinking – asks questions, reflects on choices made, etc.
