**Celebrate Matariki with this easy-to-implement Level 1 Matariki Star Art unit. **

Small hands with developing fine-motor skills will be able to create a beautiful Matariki constellation picture using masking tape, crayons/pastels and paint.

This resource comes with a printable unit plan and a Google slide show to support your teaching.

The unit plan includes:

  • a 6 page detailed unit plan with Level 1 achievement objectives, specific learning outcomes and possible assessment questions
  • detailed lesson plans split into activities for maximum flexibility and adapted to suit junior children
  • teacher introduction and preparation notes, a material list and a clear lesson sequence

In this unit students create a display of the constellation of Matariki. They use masking tape to make the stars by cutting the tape into strips. They enhance their stars with pastels or crayons.

This unit provides an introduction and exploration of shading a colour (blue) with black to create a dark sky effect. It explores the stars of Matariki in a creative, inclusive way by enabling children to make their own stars using masking tape. The unit provides ample scope for extension while also being adaptable to all levels of achievement and fine motor skills.
