Subtract Ones Across a Ten – Differentiated Worksheets

This Year 2 resource focuses on Subtract across 10 - subtracting a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number (less than 20) when the calculation crosses a ten. Children build on earlier addition strategies, partitioning the 1-digit number to first reach the previous ten before subtracting the remainder. This approach supports them in developing efficient mental strategies for subtracting across a ten.

The main worksheet activity uses number lines where learners must make exactly two jumps back:

1. Jump down to the previous ten
2. Jump back the remaining ones

To strengthen understanding, two levels of the worksheets also include ten frames, allowing learners to cross out in two different colours to match their jumps. Higher-level worksheets remove the ten frames but still require children to use the two-jump method.
