Subtracting Ones Across a Ten – Differentiated Worksheets (Year 2, White Rose Aligned)

In this small step, learners practise subtracting a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number where the calculation crosses a multiple of 10.

Each subtraction problem guides children through the process using:

  • Number lines to support visual understanding.
  • Part–whole models to partition the subtracted digit. Learners first step back to the previous ten, then subtract the remainder to find the final answer.

This resource is designed to supplement White Rose Maths – Year 2 | Autumn Term | Block 2: Addition and Subtraction | Step 12 – Subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number (crossing 10).

Differentiated Chilli Challenges

  • Level 1 (Mild): Scaffolded questions with clear number lines and colour-coded jumps that match the colour-coded part–whole support. 7 pages
  • Level 2 (Medium): Reduced scaffolds; learners complete more steps independently.5 pages
  • Level 3 (Hot): Minimal scaffolds; focus on fluency and confidence.5 pages
  • Level 4 (Challenge): Extension problems with blank number lines and part–whole models to deepen reasoning and mastery.3 pages

Printable as full worksheets or cut into strips for step-by-step practice, making problem solving less overwhelming for learners.
