Catacombs Escape Room – French GCSE

A cinematic and immersive French GCSE escape room combining translation, writing and culture deep in the maze of the Paris Catacombs.

Students find themselves locked inside the Catacombs during a school trip and must complete a series of language challenges to work out the final code and escape. The resource is designed as a full-hour digital lesson, with built-in scaffolding tips, sound cues and a bonus cultural quiz for early finishers.

What’s included
• A digital escape room with 3 main rooms:
 ○ Le scriptorium oublié: translation into English with multiple-choice questions and sentences to translate
 ○ Le laboratoire des fragments: translation into French with MCQ, gap fills and sentences to translate
 ○ Le passage des échos: focused on writing with mistakes to correct in an Instagram post, followed by two writing tasks
• Three in-game challenges leading students to find the code that opens the final door
• Bonus culture quiz for early finishers about little-known Catacombs facts
• Built-in tips to provide scaffolding throughout the game
• Teacher access slides with QR code and link
• Teacher guidance page with solutions and tip locations

We recommend students play individually or in pairs on a computer, but they can also access the escape room on a phone using the QR code provided. Most classes will complete the main escape room in around 60 minutes. High-ability or fast-moving groups may finish in around 45 minutes and continue to the bonus quiz.

The escape room is designed around GCSE grammar structures, but with a more immersive format than traditional exam-style practice. The game is also suitable for international curricula.
