Consolidation activities featuring only the letters and sounds taught to children during their first six weeks of learning phonics.
Children are not expected to blend words at this stage but are shown phonemes in the context of words in order to help them understand the relationship between letters and words.
Each phoneme in each word includes a sound symbol to help children identify whether a sound is short or stretched.
Each word includes a description and an illustration. Use these to discuss how the words can be used in spoken sentences. Supporting children to develop their spoken vocabulary and grammar is critical for them to use phonics as an effective reading strategy.
Use the Word Line activity for children to take it in turns to work together and place letters into the order of words. You can do lots of variations with this activity including racing to see how quickly children can get into correct orders.
Help children develop their fine motor skills with the Word Maker sheets on which they can cut out letters and stick them into words before having a go at tracing.
Further consolidation activities are in Boost Pack 2 which covers the remaining consonant phonemes and early vowels taught to children during the weeks 7-12 of their phonics programme.
The Boost Packs are intended for initial quick consolidation while children are still being actively taught their basic phonemes. Extended consolidation activities are available for after children have learned all of their basic phonemes and are beginning to learn to blend letters into words. Extended consolidation resources can be found here.
