Tes Maths Resource of the Week
What is it?
I believe that developing fluency in mental calculations is absolutely crucial for mathematical development. Why? Because if students are busy using valuable brain power for simple times tables or subtractions, they will struggle when it comes to more complex problems.
This collection of engaging numeracy races gets your class practising these key skills. Pupils must complete the circuit around the track as quickly as possible, answering questions on each of the four operations or rounding in order to progress. The concept is simple but truly effective!
How can it be used?
The key is consistency. Make it a regular part of your routine, and both you and your students will begin to see the benefits. I would suggest handing a printed sheet out at the start of each lesson, or having a set day for this exercise if you have other forms of crucial numeracy practice throughout the rest of week.
