AFOREST Techniques - Adverts and Leaflets

AFOREST Techniques - Adverts and Leaflets

Here is an AFOREST lesson that gets students to pick out the persuasive techniques they can see in an advert. It then goes onto analysing leaflets; for this I usually go and grab a handful of leaflets from the Tourist Information or a service station. Then you can use the middle part of the lesson and the work sheets to get students to identify and explain persuasive techniques used. This is a great lesson if your students are creating a leaflet or brochure for their assessment. It has always worked really well with Y7 and 8s.

Outstanding lesson and resources on Twycross Zoo

Outstanding lesson and resources on Twycross Zoo

As part of our rainforest South America topic our Year 5s went to Twycross Zoo. The day before I had my performance management observation. This is the lesson plan and resources in which I was grading 'outstanding' in every area - and the kids loved it! Lesson based around Literacy/Geography link looking at the Twycross Zoo website and using a range of Year 5/6 Literacy objectives to complete a group task and also a challenge reviewing a range of learning across Literacy. The lesson went really well and I would definitely do it again for an observation or if Ofsted came.

Utopia Lesson! (Includes Prezi presentation link)

Utopia Lesson! (Includes Prezi presentation link)

A task based lesson in which students create their own Utopia. Students first learn vocabulary such as Utopia, population, currency, religion, imports/exports, cultural events and climate. Students then discuss the pros and cons of life in America and life in their home countries. In this case, the home country is South Korea, but the lesson could be easily edited to include information about life in countries other than the U.S. and South Korea. Students make a list of three good and three bad things about their home countries, and talk about how they might change their home country in two different ways. The lesson culminates in a group task where students team up in groups of 2-4 and create their own Utopia by answering questions about their made up country on the Utopia Worksheet. Students can then design a visual of their country using a blank Utopia map (a map of Switzerland). A link to a Prezi presentation file is in the Utopia Lesson plan
