The cards and quiz have a bonus multi-focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing and spelling. Students can play alone, in pairs or in small groups. There are lots of whole-group games to play too. Play the whole-group quiz either before or after students play the card games. It doesn’t matter if any of the words don’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the games are a great way of encouraging your students to engage with GERMAN using a range of skills, and to build their vocabulary at the same time. Printing in black and white will work equally well, as students can easily identify the GERMAN and ENGLISH cards from the different fonts used for each language. This game uses pictures for 25 foods with each being used twice: meat, fish, ham, chicken, bread, butter, egg, cheese, water, milk, coffee, tea, soup, salad, carrot, beans, potato, fries, apple, grapes, strawberry, cherry, cake, pie, ice cream. Students must identify the food (use in sentences to make it more challenging) as they advance along the snail path. Just pictures are given, so it is easy to adapt for each textbook. Make 1 copy for every 3-4 students; print on cardstock and laminate to keep forever. You need 1 die for every game board.

1) Little handout showing students how to conjugate the irregular verb 'essen' in the present tense. 2) Translation Task on Smoking G-E, differentiated using chilis. Modelling answers to speaking questions. (Two tenses / opinions / sentence starters / justifications.) 3) Colour-coded by gender: food and drink items. To support students in their writing. 4) A fortune line to assist students when giving opinions on food and drink. (using gern, lieber am liebsten.' 5) A higher level speaking question for AQA. (Question 2- Higher). Two different versions attached. One with no support and one with key phrases to assist weaker learners. 6) An Internet forum on smoking and reading comprehension. Students play the ignorance game and learn 12 words they don't know for homework 7) A template of the translation template I use to test vocabulary knowledge and translation skills. 3 challenge questions. 8) Rip and Run starter - students work in mixed ability groups. They tear a sentence off the sheet per group. Once they have translated it as a group, they see the teacher. If it's correct, they can get another sentences. If not, the teacher circles the mistake and they discuss further in groups. Group with the most points win - great fun!!
