ESL/EFL Speaking Activity: Role Play Debate

ESL/EFL Speaking Activity: Role Play Debate

Each pair of students gets the same topic with either Agree or Disagree information. I usually assign the topics randomly. They’ll have a couple of minutes for preparation, I recommend that they write brief notes and if possible, to do some quick online research. Another modification can be that you give them the topics for homework so they can prepare more thoroughly. It depends on the level of the students and the difficulty of the topics. When they are ready, let them talk in pairs, circle and monitor. When they finish, have a short feedback discussion with them: Were they able to persuade their opponent? What arguments did they use?

PAPER 2 AQA 8700 spec Questions 3 - 5

PAPER 2 AQA 8700 spec Questions 3 - 5

This bundle contains 13 full lessons covering questions 3 - 5 from paper 2 of the AQA 8700 spec. The total of all 13 lessons individually is £42 but I’m willing to sell them for £20 giving you a saving of 52%. What will you get in this bundle? Lessons come with a range of activities and supportive material. I teach 3 hour sessions therefore each full lesson contains enough material to span 3 hours. These include videos, speaking and listening activities, various worksheets and independent writing tasks. There is also a paper 2 mock paper included in this pack based around War Speeches. My classes are of mixed abilities so the lessons are differentiated to cater to mixed cohorts. There are 2 / 3 lessons per question. Style of lessons I like to teach using cultural pop references to help engage my students and underpin the skills needed in order to pass the exam. I enjoy having a fast pace in my class and so stagger the activities from 5 / 10 / 15 / 20 / 30 mins. I usually start with a group task as a starter and a long independent writing task, based from the exam, as the final task and a short self assessment or peers assessment plenary. My topics in this bundle range from light hearted topics such as the music of Amy Winehouse and Janis Joplin, Dicaprio vrs Kanye - a top seller , to lesson which underpin more serious social issues and British values such as the UK pet trade in Monkeys and Sophie Lancaster story. Hope it helps

DiCaprio vrs Kanye : Paper 2 Question 4 GCSE English Language AQA 8700

DiCaprio vrs Kanye : Paper 2 Question 4 GCSE English Language AQA 8700

This is an entire lesson for AQA English Language (spec 8700) for Paper 2 Question 4 where the students must compare two sources. For this lesson I have used two modern sources as opposed to one modern, one older as it would be in the exam. The reason for this is highlighted in the lesson and is clear to the students what they will expect, however I have found that by using this method helps the students build confidence in tackling this overwhelming question and is a good way to build them towards comparing older sources. This lesson looks at the award speeches made by Leo DiCaprio and Kanye West, the lesson starts with a personal values starter and this idea of personal values continues throughout the rest of the lesson by looking into the values these two celebrities display in their speeches. There is room to develop the personal / British values concept if desired. The lesson has 2 videos, links to the you tube site is on both the worksheet and the power point. The activities are timed, short and allow for group discussion and discovery learning. The lesson ends with the students writing their findings in a structure which will suit the examiners needs and a short, self assessment plenary. The power point provides slides which can be printed and distributed as support / scaffolding materials for the weaker students if needed. Hope it helps

Super Duper Mega Political Rheoric Bundle. A close look at over five political speeches.

An absolute bargain! Save 32%! A half term's worth of lessons for a two/three hour-per-week class. Three sets of PowerPoints, annotated examples, models and success criteria. My suggested route through teaching: - Trump on immigration (Lesson 1 - Annotate, Lesson 2 - Essay plan, Lesson 3/4 - Essay) - Nicola Sturgeon on the referendum (Lesson 1 - Annotate, Lesson 2 - Essay plan, Lesson 3/4 - Essay) - Emma Watson on gender equality (Lesson 1 - Annotate, Lesson 2 - Essay plan, Lesson 3/4 - Essay) Bonus Lesson: Trump's plans to leave the Paris agreement (climate change). Bonus Lesson: Hung Parliament! Once those 12 lessons are over, students can be assessed on their writing by creating a speech using some of the language techniques they have studied. Options I gave: - Feminism/Gender Equality - In/Out Europe - Referendum - Banning Trump from the UK All four lessons are really well themed and some include video resources too! They look at a whole range of language features, techniques and stylistic devices that are unique to each speaker. All come with fully annotated speeches, examples of essay paragraphs and clear success criteria for students to follow.

Small actions = Big changes reading comprehension

Small actions = Big changes reading comprehension

This reading comprehension was created for ESL/EAL students with an upper intermediate to Advanced level. The reading text is original and has not been altered. The Initial questions assist the student in writing a short summary of the text. They then move on to comprehension questions and finally, to questions for group or pair discussion. This would work equally well for mother tongue students and could be included in a unit on the environment and environmental problems.

COAL MINING WITH FOLK ARTS AND POETRY - a cross curricular resource for Primary Schools

COAL MINING WITH FOLK ARTS AND POETRY - a cross curricular resource for Primary Schools

This pack brings some background information about coal mining together with songs and poems that can be used in primary schools to explore and analyse the issues surrounding coal mining. It was created by the English Folk Dance and Song Society in partnership with the National Coal Mining Museum for England. There is a wealth of folk music, song and dance associated with coal mining. The living conditions of mining families also feature in songs, as do tales of child labour and poverty. There are many songs about the different jobs and roles that people had, and sad laments about mining disasters that occurred. There is also the rapper dance tradition that grew from coal mining communities in the North East, and tunes that accompanied the dances. The material presented in this pack has all been tried and tested with visitors to the National Coal Mining Museum for England, pupils at Flockton C of E (c) First School, Wakefield (thanks to the East Peak Industrial Heritage Support Programme), and also in The Full English school projects at St John with St Mark CofE Primary School, Bury and Shawlands Primary School, Barnsley. All the material can be used to explore themes of local history, industrial revolution, child labour, poverty and social change. The material is aimed at primary age children and their teachers.
