Mental Maths Activities KS2

6 Resources
Great for starters and early finishers, this Mental Maths / Arithmetic Upper Key Stage 2 Big Bundle contains 3 resource packs (Year 5 / 6) and 3 Lower KS2 resource packs (Year 4 / 3), great for differentiation in the same class. A total of 30 PowerPoint Speed Tests, 432 Self-Check Cards and 16 Cross Number Puzzles for regular practice throughout the year. The Lower Key Stage 2 resources were originally designed for Y4 (Primary 5 and other equivalents) but would also suit some Y3 (Primary 4) classes too once the concepts have been covered. They could also be used for lower ability students in Upper KS2. The Upper Key Stage 2 resources were originally designed for Y5 and Y6 (Primary 6 and 7 and other equivalents). They could be used as part of SATs preparation. They would also suit some early KS3 classes for consolidation and revision. Concepts include: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Doubling & Halving, Fractions, Percentages, Decimals, Negative Numbers, Place Value, Money, Measure, Time and Angles. As the PowerPoints and Self-Check cards include money questions in UK currency, I have also included versions for countries that use dollars and cents. Differentiation: I have called the Lower KS2 resources Set B, while the Upper is Set A, rather than using any other identifier to help facilitate the use of both sets within the same class without the children being aware of the age level of the questions. All these Mental Numeracy resources are available individually or in smaller Lower KS2 and Upper KS2 bundles: Mental Maths Bundle Year 5 Year 6 Mental Maths Bundle Year 4 / Year 3 The information below applies to both the Lower and Upper KS2 resources, so there’s double what it says: POWERPOINT SPEED TESTS 15 informal tests split across 3 PowerPoints, designed to be shown on the whiteboard with children recording answers in jotters or on paper. One question to a slide will allow children to focus for a few seconds before the next one comes up. The question slides are plain and uncluttered so as to minimise distractions. Run the PowerPoint presentation on a timer or click it on yourself, perhaps allowing a little longer for more challenging questions. Each test features 20 questions involving a variety of mathematical skills and knowledge. At the end of each test, the same 20 slides are repeated, this time with the answer added clearly. Children can then mark their own or a partner’s work to reduce your workload. If short of time, you can whizz through the answers but the idea of each answer appearing with its question like this is that it allows for important discussions about strategies. SELF-CHECK CARDS A flexible resource that can be incorporated into many mental maths games and activities within the classroom, especially oral starters. Laminate and use again and again as starter and early finisher tasks. There are twelve calculations on each A4 sheet. Leave them as 18 A4 sheets or cut each of the question cards separately to create 216 cards. There are versions both with and without the answers printed below the questions. The with-answers versions could be used by pupils questioning each other while the version without the answers could be used by individuals testing themselves. A separate answer card is included, which individuals could consult. CROSSNUMBER PUZZLES A fun resource for early finisher tasks, mental starters, homework etc. They could be completed by individuals or in pairs or small groups, where they will promote important discussions about different mental strategies. As in a crossword puzzle, children will find it easier to work out some of the more challenging questions once they have filled in the easier ones as some digits will already be there for them. ANSWER GRIDS for all 8 puzzles are included within the file and could be printed for pupils to self-check (or displayed later on the board), cutting down on your marking! I hope these save you time and provide great practice to help boost your students’ mental maths agility. I would be grateful for a review if you get a spare moment. Many thanks. Homophones Spelling Games 2

(0)
5 KS2 Year 4, Year 5 or Year 6 spelling games to make learning about homophones and near homophones fun. These ‘splat’ SPaG activities include the following words that are often muddled up and misspelled: your / you’re (64 sentences) here / hear (64 sentences) to / two / too (64 sentences) threw / through (32 sentences) no / know (32 sentences) CONTENTS: 1 PDF document (18 pages) 1 PowerPoint (5 slides) SAVE by purchasing this with more homophones splat games as part of this Homophones BUNDLE. The games revolve around a total of 256 sentences which model a variety of structures so that while children are learning about the spelling of commonly confused words they are also learning about how to use a range of openers, connectives, sub-clauses etc to construct interesting sentences. Many sentences are silly to further engage children! It’s a challenge to make SPaG work active and engaging, rather than relying solely on worksheets and these homophones splat games are ideal for fun consolidation during the main part of SPaG lessons or can be used as purposeful early finisher and/or starter activities. If you print and laminate them all, children could self-select the homophones they need to practise. It is best played in small groups, where children each take a sentence card which features 8 sentences with a homophone word in it (homophone words are printed in bold). Children take it in turns to read a sentence from their card while the others compete to splat the correct homophone flashcard (homophone flashcards are included in black and white as well as fun colour ‘explosion’ style cards so you can choose which to print). The first student to hit the correct homophone word scores a point. Students could lose a point for hitting the wrong word to stop them being tempted to guess early. The PowerPoint includes a slide for each game and features the homophone words for splatting as a whole class version on a ‘splattable’ whiteboard, should you so wish. Thank you very much. There’s a set with English instructions and a set with French instructions, which you might want to use for older, more able or more experienced students. Two of the cards feature vocabulary that is different in Canada, therefore these two are repeated in a Canadian version at the end of the file. Consider laminating cards if you wish to use again. If playing Scoot, place or stick the cards on desks so that all students can answer one at a time. Give students a 1-page or 2-page blank answer grid. Consider mixed ability pairs and / or supplying the Christmas vocabulary support sheet for differentiation. Set a timer so that students have 30 seconds to sit and answer a card before scooting to the next one. All students move at the same time when the allotted time is done. You can call “Scoot!” or perhaps “Allez!” each time. Ensure you explain to students in which direction they should move. When students have answered all cards, mark together. An answer key is included. Even if you don’t have 40 students, you can still use all cards if you have a big enough space to arrange them. However, if you only want the same number of cards as you have students, you can remove some of the later cards. It’s also possible to remove cards you feel might be too hard for your students. Substitute cards you don’t wish to use with the included Pause Cards, numbering them appropriately and thus allowing students to take intermittent short brain breaks.   MEGABUNDLES: French KS2 / KS3 MEGA BUNDLE 1 French KS2 / KS3 MEGA BUNDLE 2

Fun French Halloween Activity Early Finisher or Cover Lesson

(0)
Revise and extend Halloween in French vocabulary (L’Halloween) this October, in KS3, KS4, or with adult learners, using this giant FSL crossword puzzle. There are 90+ spooky and scary themed words in this huge puzzle. Ideal for a whole lesson, or add this packet to your cover lesson plans or early finishers activities bank. You could return to it over several sessions. This is low prep, great for collaboration, printable, differentiated, has an answer key, and there’s even an optional hidden sentence challenge! Best not used with absolute beginners, as it’s designed to review AND expand students’ existing vocabulary, to provide a challenge. Depending on experience and ability of students and level of support given, this can work with Key Stage 3 and 4 and beyond. Please click on the preview file to check suitability for your students. Fun: Giant crosswords are enjoyable to complete. Low prep: Great for sub lessons and busy times. Flexible: Can fill a whole lesson or more, or be completed over multiple days. Early finishers: Great as an early finisher activity or extension, maybe to be competed over several sessions. Collaboration: Although it can be used for individuals, it’s especially good for pairs or small groups. Differentiation: Alternative clue page & vocab support page. Challenge: Fun hidden sentence extension! Printable: PDF file - 15 pages.   HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE THIS ACTIVITY: There are 2 versions of the clue sheets – one with just the word itself in English (to be translated into French) and an easier version with the first letter given. There’s a larger print version of the latter one too. Choose whether to provide the alphabetical answer list, perhaps just to support certain students, or distribute it only when students have done as much as they can independently Consider using mixed-ability groups Decide whether to allow access to online or traditional dictionaries, perhaps later when students have completed as much as they can independently Consider whether to use the hidden sentence challenge version (students use a blank grid with stars printed on certain squares, and then put the letters together from the star boxes to spell out a hidden word). There are 2 versions of the recording sheet for this challenge, should you wish to use them, and separate answer keys Early finishers could be directed to online sources to check out the pronunciation of unfamiliar words Whatever you choose, I hope your students have as much fun completing it as I did compiling it! You might want to expand the crossword if using with larger groups but if you can’t, it will still work in standard size. YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE: French Halloween BUNDLE French KS2 / KS3 MEGA BUNDLE 1

Place Value and Rounding Worksheets

2 Resources
Fun KS2 number sense maths puzzles worksheets - these fun printable independent activities are great for revision, early finishers challenges, starter tasks, home work and home learning, especially in the first few weeks at the start of the year. This place value and rounding fun puzzles worksheets BUNDLE was originally designed for Year 4, 5 and 6 Maths / Numeracy. Includes numbers up to 5, 6 and 7 digits and rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, whole number, 1 decimal place, two decimal places and nearest pound or dollar. Engaging alternative to standard worksheets; ideal for differentation. 13 puzzles, full answer keys, PDF format. The place value puzzles are crossnumber puzzles: 2 for numbers up to ten thousands 2 for numbers up to hundred thousands 2 for numbers up to millions Differentiation: For each of 5, 6 and 7-digit numbers the first puzzle is for practising reading the word version and writing the digit version in the grid, while the second, more challenging puzzle for each involves adding and subtracting from large numbers (increase by 1000, take away five hundred thousand etc) Works in a similar way to a crossword puzzles but with numbers entered into the grid   The rounding puzzles are hidden word puzzles: 1 for rounding to the nearest ten 1 for rounding to the nearest hundred 1 for rounding to the nearest thousand 1 for rounding to the nearest whole number 1 for rounding to the nearest one decimal place 1 for rounding to the nearest two decimal places 1 for rounding money to the nearest pound (dollar version also included)   More about hidden word puzzles: Similar to codebreaker puzzles, with a maths-related word to be revealed after the rounding work. Each puzzle contains a grid. Within each box is a number to be rounded and a letter. Once students have rounded all the numbers, they cross out any boxes containing numbers that round to certain specified target numbers. Then they put together the letters from the remaining boxes to reveal a maths word. If the word is more simple, the letters are in random order for students to reassemble. If it is a trickier word (such as a famous mathematician), the letters are already placed in the correct order in the grid. There is a further challenge question / task at the bottom of the page linked to the hidden word.   For previews and more information, please see the 2 individual resource pages. You can get these puzzles alongside my other Place Value activities and games (large differentiated sets of self-check Place Value trails for 5, 6 and 7-digit numbers and also decimals Place Value games) in this good value bundle: KS2 Place Value Activities Bundle
