This is the eighth lesson taught in the new BTEC series for the specification points ; • Understand the following; o moles, molar masses and molarities. This lesson starts by discussing moles, and what they mean in terms of atoms. Pupils are provided with some examples of converting between mass and moles, they then practice this with some quesitons either on their own or in pairs. Empirical formula is then discussed, again with examples of how to calculate this for different amounts of substances. More practice questions are provided. The conversion between molecular formula and empirical formula is then discussed, examples provided and practice given. I used Chemsheets GCSE from © www.CHEMSHEETS.co.uk to check understanding - Chemsheets GCSE 1092 and answers.

This is the ninth lesson taught in the new BTEC series for the specification points ; • Understand the quantities used in chemical reactions: o mass, volume of solution, concentration o reacting quantities o percentage yields. This lesson starts by discussing molarity, concentration and the equation needed to calculate between them. Examples are provided, then pupils have a go at some questions themselves. Reacitng quantities is then discussed, again with examples, questions for the pupils to have a go at. Finally percentage yields is dicussed and practiced. Pupils use different products (household / foods) to test universal indicator. This is a follow up lesson to being introduced to indicators. They will use their knowledge of universal indicator, pH scale and acids and alkalis to complete a table about different products pH. There are two tables attached, ones with headings and one without - simple differentiation to get higher ability pupils to come up with their own headings after given instructions. This was used with a mixed abiilty year 7 group
