I am a secondary school science teacher, and I also teach Alevel Biology. I have had a passion for adapting and creating my own resources since my teacher training and having used TES to dig me out of that stressful 'I'm teaching something new tomorrow but haven't got any good resources!' panic I decided to share the resources I have lovingly made and adapted. Most of my resources are geared towards low ability groups as that's what I have the most experience teaching.

This is a help sheet I have edited and added to to give to my BTEC students when doing their UNIT 2 coursework, assignment C. Chromatography of Chlorophyll It breaks down each section of the report and gives them headings for help with formatting and then prompt questions to indicate what they need to write for each section. At the end it also shows what is needed for distinction, merit and pass for the assignment.

This is a lesson I created for a bottom set year 10 class for the first lesson of the B6 Inheritance, variation and evolution module. It challenges students by aiming for the higher grade lesson objectives but scaffolds students throughout the lesson to achieve this. Start of the lesson is teacher-led, giving students information which there is a worksheet for them to follow at the same time. AFL as going through this. Pupil-led activity forms second half of the lesson: stations with questions for pupils to work through at their own pace. I give pupils the choice of which order they complete the stations so there is some element of choice. There is a worksheet with the station questions on if there are any pupils that aren’t completing the station work. Various mini-quiz plenaries. Could miss out exam questions / stations (whatever you choose) if time is limited, as both cover similar knowledge bases. Lesson covers types of reproduction (sexual and asexual) and the advantages and disadvantages of both. There is also a section on cloning at the end for opportunity of extending pupils.

Heading 1 This AQA GCSE lesson is designed for the new 9-1 specification, for the last lesson of the B4 Bioenergetics unit, on Metabolism and the Liver. The resources offers a full 25 slide dyslexia friendly powerpoint with activities, fill in the gaps and AFL quizzes; with opportunity for stretch and challenge. Metabolism is the sum of all of the reactions in the body; the lesson goes through definitions of metabolic reactions, examples of metabolic reactions, the role of the liver in oxygen debt and then the functions of the liver. I used this lesson with a low ability year 10 class and they found it really easy to follow. The worksheet is structured so that it follows all of the activities on the powerpoint. Dyslexia friendly resources, fill in the gaps and quick fire AFL quiz questions allow for universal offer for all pupils.

This bundle includes all 9 lessons of the B4 Bioenergetics topic for AQA New specification GCSE 9-1, for trilogy science at foundation level. The lessons were made and used with a mid-low ability class, but can be adapted for the higher foundation students, or even for the higher trilogy paper as the content is much the same, just check with the specification what the extra content is they need to know. Most of the past paper questions are aimed at foundation, with a few higher ones for challenge. Topic includes lessons on: Photosynthesis introduction The leaf and photosynthesis 3 & 4. Required photosynthesis practical Maximising photosynthesis and limiting factors Aerobic respiration Anaerobic respiration Effects of exercise Metabolism and the liver All lessons will include a dyslexia friendly powerpoint, differentiated lesson resources, opportunities for AFL, bell task, starter, plenary and occasional homework opportunities. There are options (usually every lesson) for self or peer assessment. This bundle includes the required practical on photosynthesis, with sample results (as the practical itself is very uninspiring and slow to work; sample results may be useful if your class doesn’t collect any that can be analysed). Individually, the bundle of lessons come to a total price of £23.50 but if you buy as a bundle they’re only £18! Suitable for the new AQA GCSE specification 9-1.

A project I edited and used with my year 7’s. I set it as an independent learning project, giving them task deadlines each lesson. Covers: planet order in the solar system researching facts about planets planet factfiles / posters build a model of a planet comets, asteroids, meteorites etc days and night seasons 7 life processes aliens! Opportunities for creativity, in the model making, designing aliens and making meteorlogy reports; for researching and always - LEARNING!

This is the 1st lesson of the new AQA GCSE (9-1) B6 Inheritance, variation and evolution module. The worksheets accompany the powerpoint, which includes introductory information about sexual and asexual reproduction and advantages and disadvantages of both. There are opportunities for AFL (the comparison table), class discussions and extension. The powerpoint also includes information and questions on Cloning (for separates / higher tier). Multiple plenary activities at the end of the lesson.

An independent project I created for my year 8 groups, based on the topic they should have been learning in school but turned the lessons into a project to make it easier for them to work independently on a project. Project is centered around how we see rainbows, and covers the following topics: What is light? Luminous vs non-luminous objects The electromagnetic spectrum What is a rainbow? When do they form? The eye Light ray diagrams Reflection Refraction Why do we only see rainbows as a semi-circle? Research into how, and whether or not, a rainbow could be seen as a full circle Investigation into the visible light spectrum At the end of the powerpoint, there is opportunity for pupils to plan an investigation, using prisms if in school or other objects they can find (eg. cds etc) that would create a rainbow spectrum. Slides include information on planning, recording and analysing. Designed to be set over a period of a few weeks, but could be split into a few lessons if desired.
