What is a dragon? A PowerPoint all about dragons to stimulate writing with dragon images for ‘Quickwrite’ adjective activity. After sharing this introduction the children designed their own dragons, named them and then we watched ‘How to train a dragon featurette’. The children then wrote instructions on how to train their own dragons and we ended the unit of work by writing acrostic dragon poems.

The children then visit each station, read the sentence, identify the coordinating or subordinating conjunction and record on their individual record sheets to build up their own word bank. Both resources are editable and the subordination version is linked to the stories of Roald Dahl.

A fun get up and go 'Scoot' game ideal for Year 2 children. Print out the 16 A4 sentence cards (laminate) and position around your classroom or outdoor area. The children visit each station, read the sentence, identify the word from the chosen word group and record it on their record sheet (also a useful activity for reinforcing the four sentence types). A great lesson starter or end of unit/SATs preparation activity.

A useful resource to encourage children to be confident to have a go at spelling new words. I laminated these cards and each child has their own which they use when writing independently. I developed this resource as part of the dyslexia friendly school award.
A very handy and flexible game (played in pairs/groups) which can be played a few different ways:
Option 1: Read it! Roll the dice, choose a word in the corresponding column & read it. If the child is correct they win the word & cover it or colour it.
Option 2: Spell it! Roll the dice, choose a word in the corresponding column, read it, your partner covers it & then the child has a go at spelling it. If the child is correct they win the word & cover it or colour it.
Option 3: Read it, Spell it! I used this for a mixed Y1 and Y2 pairing where Y1's had to read the words and Y2's had to spell the words.
Also included is a table showing all words in the phonics screener since 2011 and a blank game board so you can chop and change words to suit your needs!
