Phonics: phonograms: Word Family -an Activities for Centers, Group or Whole Class Work

(0)
This is a print-and-go learning center or whole class set for the “an” word family. It includes: • -an phonics read and color booklet – “Stan and Dan Tan in a Pan” • A set of “an” cards for Phonics Go Fish! • Two separate Readers Theater scripts – at two levels • Cards may also be used for “an” Concentration Learning word families (also known as phonograms) helps students read in “chunks”. Reading in “chucks” allows students to recognize different word patterns – or sections of a word, such as “an”, rather than having to sound out each letter. For example, the –an family includes play, say, stay, etc. Why are word families important? 1. When children begin to read, they sound out every letter. This breaks up the flow of the words, is extremely slow, and makes it difficult for them to transcend to reading comprehension. By learning families of words, children are able to read familiar patterns of letters quickly and fluently. 2. As children progress from simple to more complex words, the patterns, or chunks – continue to help them to decipher longer words. 3. Word families also help with spelling – as students are able to recognize spelling patterns and apply these to other words of the same family.

Daily Oral Language Plus -- CCSS Aligned -- Writing, Grammar and More

Print and Go! Daily Oral Language Plus for 5th and 6th grades. Common Core State Standards Aligned. This packet contains 12 weeks of daily language work – and not just your usual DOL. Each day contains three sentences to correct and reconstruct – plus students are required to write a short essay using their reconstructed sentences. Since DOL as a stand alone activity does little to help real world writing skills – each of these DOL Plus pages requires students to be corrected, modified and then reassembled and embellished into paragraphs. Perfect to use as warm-ups, bell ringers or early finishers! There are 52 days of student DOL Plus activities, with 52 days of teacher corrections to display for the class. Additionally, a form fillable PDF is included for teacher and or student corrections, class display or whatever you choose. Seventy-eight pages in all. Each DOL contains three sentences to be corrected and modified as well as a paragraph to write – based on the sentences. Directions: 1. Print out sheets for students to paste into their interactive journals. Print out student 2. instructions for pasting in their interactive journals. 3. Students will use the DOLs to create the best possible sentences without losing its meaning. 4. Students will then construct the best paragraph possible. 5. Review sentences together. Select students to read their paragraphs – using sticks or some other random method – so each student is accountable and knows their number will one day come. Student notebook samples follow instructions. If you have any questions or if you find mistakes please email elizabethpinotti@gmail.com. Word Family Flowers: Phonics 45 Flowers in All

(0)
These are Word Family – Short Vowel Flowers. I’ve been using them to teach students to read for years. They’re perfect for using at home or in a classroom learning center! What are word families? Word families are groups of words that share the same ending. For example, the words cat, fat, and mat all belong to the “-at” word family. The worlds ball, fall and tall belong to the "-all" word family. Why teach reading with word families? 1) The English language is complicated. Word families help beginning readers find patterns within words. 2) Knowing word families makes sounding out words easier because instead of laboriously sounding out each letter, the reader reads the first sound and attaches it to the familiar word family name. When reading the word cat -- rather than reading /k/ /a/ /t/, the child learns to read /k/ /at/.

Analyzing Primary Source Documents: The Emancipation Proclamation

(0)
Imperative for understanding, critical thinking and 21st Century learning is the ability for students to analyze primary source documents. Included in this lesson are copies of the original, handwritten versions of the Emancipation Proclamation, a typewritten "Interactive Reader" version for analysis, student instructions on analyzing primary sources and a Source Document Graphic Organizer. Primary sources provide a window into the past—unfiltered access to the record of artistic, social, scientific and political thought and achievement during the specific period under study, produced by people who lived during that period. Bringing young people into close contact with these unique, often profoundly personal, documents and objects can give them a very real sense of what it was like to be alive during a long-past era.
