Long Vowel Sound Wordsearches X 5

Wordsearches feature Long Vowel sound alternative spellings for A, E, I, O and U The words to find are not listed. This is quite challenging so I have provided the words for less confident readers on a separate sheet. Instructions: Circle or place one neat line through the words on the grid. Copy the word neatly below and highlight the focus long vowel sound. Count how many different ways there are of spelling that vowel sound. I’d ask children to work in pairs to find the words. If they were stuck, I’d ask one pair to join another pair and share their findings. Children could compete to find all of the words and spelling alternatives first. There are plenty of Alien words to be found and resourced on these sheets.

Collect items. Make sure you have groups of one and groups of more than one. I tried to choose items that my pupil would be able to spell. For example- sticks, pens, rocks, coins, spots, seeds and buttons. Ask the child to sort the items into groups and then to write a list/ inventory. Whilst doing so I explained the use of s and the meaning of plural. Writing the list will also provide repetitive spelling practise/ a chance to learn how to spell the word some.
