Sports Jigsaw Reading Exercise

Sports Jigsaw Reading Exercise

This is a jigsaw reading exercise which was really created for teaching the technique to a group of EFL teachers in Sweden. You divide the class into four groups (or multiples of four groups), giving each group one of the texts about the history of different sports. I usually hand out one between two, so that the pairs work better together. The first part of the task involves the group working out which of the jumbled-up questions they *can* answer from their input material. Then one member of the group is selected (by the teacher or by the group) as a 'messenger' who'll go to the other groups in turn and tell them what the answers are to her group's questions. I usually insist that the messengers change group at the same time, to avoid chaos in the classroom! When the messenger comes 'home', she knows 5 of the answers, but her home group knows all of them, so the last stage is to have the home group tell her the answers to the other questions. A variant on the exercise is to use a text from your textbook (particularly if it's a bit boring) and supplement it with [three] other bits of input material. You can see to it too that if you've got stronger and weaker pupils in your class the weaker group might have easier input material and the stronger group more difficult material. No-one can tell from the questions which input material was easier or more difficult.
