Spelling Workout (Ages 4 - 7) - an active spelling resource

Spelling Workout (Ages 4 - 7) - an active spelling resource

Recently I was working on a Closing The Gap project with some focus children in Upper Primary. The aim was to improve spelling ability with given rules. As part of the project I used physical activities to engage the pupils in learning their words. The results were largely positive. After the project was complete I spoke with the children and evaluated the process. They all agreed that doing physical activities to help with their spelling was really fun and engaging. I decided to build on this feedback as I wanted to my whole class to have the opportunity to get physical with their spelling, and so Spelling Workout - Workout Spelling was created. A big thank you to my amazing teaching colleagues who demonstrated the physical activities for the videos. What is Spelling Workout - Workout Spelling? Spelling Workout - Workout Spelling designates a different physical exercise/activity for each letter in the alphabet. Pupils can work on their spelling words whilst working up a sweat. There are videos to accompany each letter that demonstrate the exercise/activity required. There are two sets, one aimed at early years (ages 4 - 7) and one for upper primary (ages 8 - 11). There is also a poster included that can be printed for the class or used as a reference sheet / handout. Why Spelling Workout - Workout Spelling? To engage pupils, encourage exercise and to have some fun with spelling. This is quite literally spelling exercise! You can use the alphabet or videos in any way you choose. Make it work for you. Below is just some ideas for class use, if you have any other suggestions please let me know. I’m always looking for ideas! Workouts for weekly spelling words Workouts for spelling out names Brain Breaks Spelling workstations / corners Shout Outs (where a teacher or a pupil lead and shout out letters for classmates to follow in a routine, at the end of the workout fellow pupils can guess the word)

Minimal equipment is required, (at most a few balls, hoop & bench) so the setup of your lesson is so simple! › Divide the class equally at the stations and have them work for 45-60 seconds (you can play some loud, energizing music!). Blow your whistle and the students can then record their personal scores before rotating around to the next station (30 second rest period). Depending on your planned time for the lesson, students can go around the circuit twice or even 3 times. Play the video stations you’ll be doing for that session, so they’ll be prepared and know what to do when they get going around the circuits in the hall. Fitness testing sheets You can print out the circuit scoring sheets for students to individually record their results/points at each activity. They can then track and compare their results term to term and see how they have improved. Bonus posters As extra content, we’ve put together 6 high-quality posters, 1 for each fitness component, showing the activities. These can be printed A4 or even A3 for you to put up around your classroom or gym area. We know you’ll love these circuit station task cards – If you are a teacher at elementary, middle or even high school, you need these task cards to help keep your students healthy and active, and they’re great anytime of the year. Cluedo Circuit session

Cluedo Circuit session

This is a great adaptation of the game Cluedo mixed with circuit training. Each station has an exercise differentiated to an easy option and a slightly harder option once the pupils have completed the station they can turn over the sheet to find a letter, a piece of sporting equipment and a room around school they use this information to tick off on their worksheet. The letters can be changed to fit the name of someone famous or even a teacher (on the example worksheet it spells MRS GRIST) these can be changed easily on the powerpoint and on the worksheet to fit any area. From my experience the pupils loved this activity

Core PE - Tennis - 3 Ability Levels Pack - 16 x Lesson Plans

A complete set of 16 tennis lessons, including introductory, intermediate and advanced levels. Adapted from the concept of ‘Mini Tennis’, which uses the formats of Mini Red, Mini Orange and / or Mini Green. Lessons are planned to be done on tennis courts. However, they can easily be adapted for indoors too, played on badminton courts with small rackets and sponge balls (great to use when introducing types of ball spin). The pack includes: Complete set of 16 lessons (6 at introductory level; 5 at intermediate level; 5 at advanced level) Warm-up ideas (for each level) Teaching points Q & A examples Game Ideas (for each level) Simple & Printable Layout As PE teachers, most of us would agree that tennis is a great sport to teach but often a difficult one for pupils to grasp… it’s not an easy sport to master, particularly on outdoor courts! The original idea was to adapt the concept of Mini Tennis to suit our pupils in their tennis lessons… and its definitely helped! This tailored approach enables pupils to develop vital skills and techniques based on their ability levels (rather than their age).
