KS1 Science 'Staying Alive' topic, sorting tasks / activities

Resources made for Science Week with a focus on ‘Staying Alive’. We learnt about the difference between living and non living things, that animals including humans grow from babies into adults, that some animals grow inside their mother while others hatch from an egg, children kept a food journal for later learning about a balanced diet. Before learning about basic needs, children attempted to complete a mind map, adding to this later. Living / Not Living / Never Lived sorting activity / workstation task What do you call a baby… table to complete 5 day food journal - table for students to complete (Monday to Friday) Egg or Mum? Sorting activity / workstation task - did this animal grow inside its mother or hatch from an egg? Human basic needs - male and female mind map activity, pupils to add what is essential for human life. Male & Female Animal Names

Male & Female Animal Names

My Male & Female Animals Names actually uses a familiar 3-part card approach to introducing the nomenclature in a way that is very familiar to the young Montessori reader. They do enjoy the visual images quite a lot, so it seems to be a logical first step before the traditional presentation of masculine and feminine. (Which I do intend to get to someday! So many ideas, so little time!) Here is a variety of 20 animals that children will enjoy looking at, talking about and learning new names…some of which are sure to give the giggles. I made enough examples that you should be able to easily make several rotations of the materials over time. To make, just print on card stock, cut and laminate if you wish. Thanks so much for considering my work! Mary

Resources to accompany 'You're Safe With Me'

Resources to accompany 'You're Safe With Me'

A selection of resources to accompany You’re Safe With Me’, by Chitra Soundar and illustrated by Poonam Mistry. When the moon rises high and the stars twinkle, it is bedtime for the baby animals of the Indian forest. But tonight, when the skies turn dark and the night grows stormy, the little ones can’t sleep. SWISH-SWISH! CRACK-TRACK! FLASH-SNAP! goes the storm. Only Mama Elephant with her words of wisdom can reassure them. “You’re safe with me.” A #ReadforEmpathy Book 2018 The text and the resources are most suitable for KS1. There are a range of resources available here: the curriculum map provides details of how ‘You’re Safe With Me’ can be used in lessons across the curriculum, and the teacher information file and guided reading worksheet can be used by teachers preparing to use the text in the classroom. These resources support National Curriculum expectations for KS1. All resources are designed to aid teachers in using a diverse text in the classroom and should encourage pupils to develop empathy, to think about the diverse cultures of our world, and to celebrate it. Pet Care Assembly for Key Stage I

Pet Care Assembly for Key Stage I

Pet Care Assembly for Key Stage I This script is a totally moveable feast! The cast consists of Narrator (Class Teacher) plus 30 pets - the number and type of pets can, of course, be changed to match any class requirement. Although it is full of humorous moments, the message behind it is a serious one - that of taking the business of pet care itself seriously. The length of this performance is around 10 - 15 minutes *plus - allowing for ‘parade’ and ‘additions’ from children themselves i.e. information about their particular pets. It could potentially be double this length depending on how much additional information and suggested poetry is included. Great fun. Would love to see this performed! Sample Text: Narrator: You see, pets do take a lot of looking after. They are a big responsibility! (Pauses) What do you think is the most important part of looking after a pet? Child 4: Making it happy? Narrator: Correct! Child 5: And healthy! Narrator: Well done! So, you have to do a lot of homework before you even choose a pet. Child 6: Sounds like being at school! Child 7: Having a pet is meant to be fun! Narrator: But it’s no fun for your pet if it’s not looked after properly. Take that Great Dane, for example. (‘Great Dane’ stands up) Child 8: He’d take a lot of feeding! Narrator: Correct! Big dogs like big meals! But that’s not all! Child 9: He’ll need a lot of exercise! Child 10: Long walks! Narrator: Two or three times a day! He won’t want to be left inside by himself all day! (Great Dane shakes his head in agreement and sits down) Narrator: Animals have needs, just like us! And we need to respect their needs! Maybe someone could share with us, how they look after their pet? Child 11: I have two guinea pigs called Bill and Ben! Narrator: Two guinea pigs? Child 11: Yes, they like company! Narrator: And where do you keep them? Child 11: In a hutch with a nice grassy run. They also have cardboard boxes and pipes to hide in if they get frightened.

Butterfly Picture-Poem Frame, EYFS/Y1 + Guidance Notes

Butterfly Picture-Poem Frame, EYFS/Y1 + Guidance Notes

This resource comprises a picture-poem frame sheet and a one-page guide for teachers. The hand-drawn butterfly picture-poem is a Literature resource for young children. Its opening phrase invites describing words for butterflies, which can be written on the short, clear lines around the picture. There is also a simile to complete: 'They are as colourful as - ’ , and space for further ideas. There is plenty of scope for colouring too. The guidance notes (or Guide) offers word and simile suggestions to prompt for, and thoughts about the colouring aspect, as well as ideas for preparing children for the activity as a whole. The resource supports several aspects of the EYFS curriculum - Literacy, Expressive Arts & Design and Understanding the World, also providing opportunities for reading, spelling, fine motor skills and more.

'Fish are...' Writing & Colouring Sheet + Guide

'Fish are...' Writing & Colouring Sheet + Guide

This resource comprises a writing/colouring sheet + a one-sheet guide for teachers, both black-and-white, PDFs. The fish-themed writing and colouring sheet - or picture poem frame - is a simple and attractive activity for EYFS. It offers a single line (at the top) for descriptive writing, with the starter words ‘Fish are’. The space below is filled with a large, hand-drawn scene of a patterned fish under the sea. The guide provides a list of relevant words to prompt for as needed, and two suggestions for extending the literacy aspect. The resource supports multiple curricular areas, in particular: Literacy, Expressive Arts & Design, Physical Development (fine motor skills) and Understanding The World. The attractive design has been proven to motivate young children to think up and try to write descriptive words for the fish, and to experiment with colours and pencil control. Enthuse children in the topic first, perhaps by showing pictures or videos of fish in the sea, looking at some in an aquarium, reading a story about a fish and enacting them together.

Animal Noises #2 Wordsearch Sheet Starter Activity Keywords Cover Nature

Animal Noises #2 Wordsearch Sheet Starter Activity Keywords Cover Nature

Wordsearch Puzzle sheet of keywords on the theme of ‘Animal Noises’. Powerpoint so can be used on the board or printed as a worksheet. Includes space for students to explain the keywords and suggested extension activities. Can take 10 minutes or an hour, depending on which activities the students complete. Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen. The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!

In this informative and engaging PowerPoint presentation you and your children will learn all about… What adaptations are Physical and behavioral adaptations with detailed examples of each Camouflage as a physical adaptation Two purposes of camouflage (to hide while searching for food; to hide to escape from becoming food). How camouflage evolved depending on the type of animal and its habitat Furry mammals employ different types of camouflage than aquatic ones. Four main types of camouflage adaptations Blending in or concealing Coloration – fur, scales, feathers, skin, etc. o Some animals change coloring depending on the seasons o Some can change their coloring quickly depending on their surroundings (chameleons, octopus, etc.) Disruptive coloration – stripes, spots, patterns, etc. Disguise, or appear like something else (walking stick, leafy sea dragon) Mimicry, some animals mimic different or more dangerous animals (some nonpoisonous snakes look like poisonous ones, some moths have designs on their backs that look like large eyes, etc.) Interesting facts and much more When the presentation is over have your kids expand on what they’ve learned with three higher-level thinking activities.
