The Nowhere Emporium (UKS2, Fiction) - planning ideas for a creative literacy unit

The Nowhere Emporium (UKS2, Fiction) - planning ideas for a creative literacy unit

This resource contains ideas for planning a creative literacy unit based on ‘The Nowhere Emporium’, an excellent novel by Ross MacKenzie*. Suitable for Upper Key Stage 2. Plan a fantastic unit of work that includes a visit to a museum to marvel at treasures, creating your own Book of Wonders through writing and designing and building a snow globe! Story synopsis When Daniel Holmes hides from the local bully in the doorway of a newly appeared shop, he has no idea that he has stepped over a magical threshold. The Nowhere Emporium is the invention of magician Lucien Silver: part shop, part theme park, a place where wonders - amazing sights and experiences - appear at the stroke of a magician’s pen. Fascinated by the wonders of the Emporium, Daniel begins to discover his own magical potential and the places his imagination can take him to. But as Daniel quickly discovers, the world of magic can be a dangerous place. How to use this resource This resource is structured into five parts. Inspiration - sharing the book with your class. Incubation - exploring the ideas in the book through reading, drama and discussion. Connection - making cross-curricular links with this book. Application - getting the children writing creatively. Illumination - bringing the work to life through art and design. Each part is designed to help you deliver a structured literacy unit that offers children room for creativity, develops opportunities for meaningful learning and is plugged in to different areas of the curriculum. This ‘Have you Tried?’ resource can form the basis for an outstanding, cross-curricular unit of literacy work. For more ideas like this, visit articulateeducation.co.uk *Please note this is not a complete set of lesson plans but there are many ideas in this resource that can form the basis of a unit of work. It has been designed in this way intentionally so you can adapt it to your class and school.

The Greatest Showman 10 minute medley

The Greatest Showman 10 minute medley

This is a 10 minute medley that I have edited and produced. It would be great for a school performance or an assembly activity. The songs included (in order) are: The greatest show, Million Dreams, This is Me and Come Alive. There are 3 files to this resource: The Song Sheet the lyrics are in two colours, Black for solo singing parts that can be split to suit your group and Blue for the ensemble parts. The Medley MP3 This is a medley arranged by myself, it is a backing track but the original singers remain for the ensemble parts just to give the kids a bit of help. The Medley with singing MP3 I have recorded the song with vocals to show where the solo parts come in. I performed this medley with KS1 and Lower KS2 children. I split the solo parts into 3-4 lines each child, either alone or in little groups. They had no trouble learning their parts and the added ensemble vocals gave the volume needed for the big chorus parts. Please leave a review and happy singing!

Role in The Middle

Role in The Middle

A thorough look at the aims and objectives of the Drama exercise, “Role-in-the-Middle”, with guidelines, examples and rationale for experienced and inexperienced drama teachers alike. The aims are to collaborate and create a new character, or flesh out an existing character. To discover or invent the rules which lead to high quality work. A character building game, where one student, or empty chair, takes the centre, representing a blank character. Around them, other students take turns to make contributions, developing the character and filling in the blanks.

DRAMA IN ACTION for JUNIORS

DRAMA IN ACTION for JUNIORS

DRAMA IN ACTION was originally written for teachers of English who had little or no experience (and sometimes no inclination) to teach Drama. Accordingly, ease, friendliness and effectiveness were of paramount concern - as well as making the activities have huge appeal - in designing the programme. Since then, many experienced teachers of drama have been kind enough to say how helpful it has been to have the programme at hand. DRAMA IN ACTION does the lot. There is very little to prepare. Though not advisable, you can walk into a session, open the book and work through the unit you choose. Follow the steps and it will work. Of course, you can and probably will ladd lots of your own ideas - and those of the juniors - onto each session. It is not restricted to juniors. It has been equally successful with groups of senior citizens too. Hardly surprising, as drama transcends age and many other restrictions. As has been said often, and will be said, again and again: the only limit is your and their imagination.

This is a short ‘Whodunit?’ play I created. I used it with a Year 7 class but it would be suitable for any KS3 year group. There are 11 parts in the play, I have included an instructions sheet which explains how the play works. I used this as a starter activity to introduce mystery writing and building of suspense. Enjoy!

The problem of plastic waste is a recurring theme in several of these resources.
