Transforming graphs of a function/ Plotting transformations with Desmos/ GeoGebra

L/O: To plot and then comment on transformations of a function. Worksheet activity where students type in basic function f(x)=x squared into Desmos or GeoGebra and then do various transformations of this function. Students plot and draw what happens on the graphs and make a comment about what they find. Comment sections are scaffolded to guide pupils in describing the transformation. The worksheet is 4 sides of A4, with a gradual increase in difficulty. I have used this with high ability year 7 and 8 classes, plus high and middle ability year 9, 10 and 11 classes. Transforming function graphs (translations and reflections of non-trigonometric graphs) is grade 7 on the new GCSE 9-1 scale. As an unprotected Word document you can edit it as required.

Find as many gradients on the picture of the spider as you can! A shaded and an unshaded version is included:-)

Basics of graphs - vertical, horizontal, parallel and gradients

This is a basic worksheet to recap x = constant and y = constant graphs, finding equations of graphs using parallel graphs, and finding gradient. I have used it to recap these concepts before going on to other topics with year 11s

SK18Maths - Recognising graphs - Matching Task - Exponential Cubic Quadratic Linear Reciprocal

This is a matching task on recognising types of graphs, their coordinates and their equations. There are blank tables in the actual task that cause pupils to substitute in values and the recognise the graph from the coordinates. The solutions are provided, witht he answers highlighted pink if they needed to be fill in by pupils.

Intro to Geogebra - drawing graphs

This worksheet is for a year 8 class to work through on the computer - using Geogebra for the first time. Only basic functions of Geogebra are used (plotting equation, adding sliders, finding intersections) while they explore the shapes of graphs.

Real Life Graphs Mobile Phone Tarriffs

This activity requires students to draw graphs comparing cost against minutes of use for a variety of (made up) tariffs. Once the students have drawn the graphs (which is best done on A3 paper), there are a series of questions that require them to use their graph and the tariffs themselves to find solutions. This activity tends to take 2 lessons with a KS3 group. Answers and the correct graph are included.

Clue! Linear Regression - Residuals, Word Problems, Graphing

This is a 3 clue practice based off the popular board game. Students will work through 4 clues to find the suspect, an accomplice, weapon and location. Students will use their knowledge of linear regressions to determine the suspect, murder weapon and location. Students will solve questions related to finding residuals, word problems based on linear regressions and graph linear regressions.

Drawing other standard graphs

This lesson is a follow on from the lessons involving drawing the quadratic curve. The lesson consists of a couple of worked examples on drawing standard curves, followed by information about some standard graphs and their shape. The lesson also has an worksheet for students to tackle in class or as a piece of homework.
