Tes Research Series: Volume One

Tes Research Series: Volume One

The Tes Research series: volume one - 60 pages of interviews with acclaimed academics - providing you with the information you need to know about: Being a research-informed professional: Dylan William, emeritus professor of educational assessment at UCL Institute of Education, talks about the usefulness of the research that’s out there and how teachers are currently consuming it. How memory works: World-renowned memory researchers Professors Robert and Elizabeth Bjork explain how to match teaching to what we know about how memory works, and why linking learning to a student’s interests and group work is key. Dyslexia: Professor Margaret Snowling, president of St John’s College Oxford, is one of the world’s leading dyslexia researchers. Here, she addresses myths around the condition and warns that education is still missing opportunities to help support students at an earlier stage. Growth Mindset: Carol Dweck, Lewis and Virginia Eaton professor of psychology at Stanford University, is the creator of the highly popular growth mindset theory. Here she embraces the intense scrutiny that the theory has been subjected to and delves headfirst into the questions behind its validity. The use of play in education: Dr Sara Baker is trying to change perceptions of play in the classroom with her work at Cambridge’s Play in Education, Development and Learning (PEDAL) Centre. She conducts research into the use of play in schools and believes that we might have been getting it wrong. How we learn to read: Daniel Willingham, professor of psychology at the University of Virginia and one of the world’s leading experts on research into reading, talks through the three processes children need to get right to become successful readers and why teachers need to overcome the fact that phonics resources tend to be ‘boring’. Autism: Uta Frith is one of the world’s leading experts on autism and emeritus professor of cognitive development at UCL. She began studying autism in 1966 when it was an emerging field of research, and says we’re now a much more autistic-aware society, but that myths and misunderstandings still remain, particularly in schools.

New IEP template/Pupil Learning Passport

New IEP template/Pupil Learning Passport

The file included is an updated/new IEP template which is renamed ‘Pupil Learning Passport’. It is used successfully in conjunction with face-to-face parental meetings once per term. We allocated 20-25 minutes each for the Autumn term parental meetings and 10-15 minutes each for the Spring and Summer term meetings, although longer may be needed depending on the nature of the outcomes, progress made as well as the individual circumstances surrounding the pupil . Pupil Learning Passports (PLPs) can be used for SEND, LAC and disadvantaged pupils. What does it do? Outlines personal details and SEND category/categories Links to SEND ranges Outlines the pupil’s strengths, achievements and interests ( pupil discussions are held once a year prior to the first parental meeting). Outlines external agencies involved Outlines background information (status, medical and external agencies) Incorporates pupil voice - ‘barriers to learning’ and ‘I learn best when’ States outcomes and learning targets (Autumn, Spring and Summer) Outlines provision (intervention, resources, strategies and what I can do at home to help Tracks attainment and progress data Reviews outcomes Incorporates parent views Includes details of transition Why is it more effective? One document that is updated each term for one year and the follows the pupil into future year groups One document that tracks pupil progress for their whole school career from Reception to Y6, or whenever they join your school In-line with the SEND Code of Practice 2015, incorporating parent and pupil voice and views Sections are written in conjunction with the pupil It combines IEPs and Pupil Passports removing the need for two separate documents Links directly to SEND Provision Map Saves teachers time having ‘tick box’ options in various sections All relevant information needed for referrals is in one place All relevant information in one place to ensure all staff involved with the child is aware of provision, needs, resources and strategies Acts as a transition document (class to class/teacher to teacher, across Key stages and to new schools) Overall, it replaces a lot of singular documents and creates one meaningful and multi-purpose document for SEND pupils.

My Meeting is a visual pupil voice resource to increase participation and engagement in meetings

My Meeting is a visual pupil voice resource to increase participation and engagement in meetings

This 24-page booklet is intended to prepare children and young people for meetings that they are invited to attend. This could be a termly or annual review, looked after child review or any meeting where the pupil’s voice is really valued (as recommended in the SEN code of practice). It is intentionally simple to accommodate a range of needs and ages. By preparing pupils well beforehand, they will better understand the purpose of these meetings, be more fully engaged in them and have a lasting record of the decisions made there. It is also hoped that the owners of this book will be encouraged to personalise the booklet by adding their own photo next to the box on the front cover alongside a drawing that they have coloured in. Some images to colour in are included along with drawings of people (if a photo is not available). Additionally, there are some bubble letters to use should they want to put their initials on the front cover. If not, those pages do not need to be included in their booklet. It is intended that appropriate text and photos will be added to each page in whatever way is most meaningful to the young person. A visual timetable and a ground rules prompt is also included to laminate and display prominently at the start of and throughout the meeting. The typeface of the booklet has been deliberately sized and coloured to be accessible to those with visual impairments and difficulties processing text.

KS2 Maths (The Mean)

These questions have fully-worked solutions which can be displayed on a whiteboard making feedback with students more efficient. Click 👉 tes.com/…/KS2-Maths-Questions… for similar-style compilations on the other KS2 topics.<hr>This particular compilation is from the STATISTICS strand and contains questions on The Mean. There are a few standard questions, but also plenty of reasoning questions which require the students to show that they understand the relationship between the mean and the total.<hr>I have designed this compilation to be printed as an A4 or A5 booklet which is in the style of the actual SATs papers and is convenient for use in class or as homework. It can even be given to individual students if a parent is asking for ‘some more work’! KEY POINTS: I have provided full answers, with comments and working where helpful. I have maintained the style of the actual SATs questions so that students can become comfortable with the way that SATs questions are presented. Most of the questions are from actual SATs papers, but I have also added questions so that this resource matches the requirements the current curriculum better than the older resources that are still in common use (note that many of the older resources of this type contain questions on topics which are no longer examined). I have spent a lot of time arranging the questions so that there is a general increase in difficulty as students work through them, and so that they fit on the pages better – this means less wasted space and significant paper-saving when printing 😃 <hr>👍If you like this resource, then please rate it and/or leave a comment💬. Giving independence advice

This resource is designed to help learners explore barriers to becoming more independent. The resource consists of case studies and a page of visual prompts to be considered as possible ways to break down barriers to independence. E.g. role playing an activity before doing it for real or using google images to plan a route to an unfamiliar place. Both effective ways to reduce anxiety levels. Learners are required to consider up to four basic cases studies and offer advice from the options provided. Advice can be different forms depending on the level of the learner e.g. Learners can illustrate the advice, using sheet 2 as guidance, they can copy the label of the advice or they can form their own sentence(s) inspired by the options provided. The activity can be used with the key words for independence to embed literacy skills.
