Te Reo Maori Words that Every Kiwi Should Know

This fun and engaging game helps to reinforce and introduces students to the Maori language. The games shuffle ability assures that no two games are ever the same which means you can use the same resource multiple times. I typically put the class into small groups and ask a member of the group to choose a color and number. That is the question that they have to answer. If correct they get one point. Then I move to the next group. Alternatively the whole class answers and then we tally up the points to get a winner. I run it on an interactive whiteboard but would be equally successful on a projector, computer or TV screen. Alternatively it could be run for an individual student on their own device. When you start the game press the shuffle button to randomize the questions ensuring that no game is ever the same. This means that this Jeopardy game can be used multiple times with the one class as it is different every time. This is a PowerPoint Macro Show. To run the game double click the file and make sure you say "yes" to running macros. If you do not the questions will not shuffle correctly. I have tested on a PC but it should work on other devices. Students build Maori Language Fluency, identifying Maori days months and seasons, with this no fuss 5 in a Row PowerPoint game. Students convert the Maori word to English on their playing board.This game is self running either individually, as a group, or as a whole class. Either way, students find it entertaining, engaging and fun and is ideal for Maori Language week as well as all year round. I have included 2 versions of the game with this download. One, a beginner game with the answers appearing after 5 seconds and two, an advanced game that the students need to translate the Maori language independently or in small groups. The games can run on computers, whiteboards or projectors. All that is required is that you print, cut and laminate the Playing Boards and press shuffle and then start on the PowerPoint Show. There are 30 different Playing Boards for your students to choose from and with the shuffling ability of the game, every game is different so that your students do not get bored of it. This game is self timed with a 10 second interval between the questions giving the students enough time to mark off or put a counter on their Playing Board. A great hands-on activity to reinforce the reading of 350 Māori high frequency words. Make a fishing pole using a stick, string and magnet. Attach a paper clip (or split pin) to the fish and voilá! It’s time to go fishing. These fish could also be used as a classroom ‘word wall’ display or used for activities in a literacy centre. 6 fish per A4 page 3 fish swimming left / 3 fish swimming right Blank fish are also provided so you can add extra words if necessary. Fun and engaging activity that could be used as a lesson starter or part of a range of lesson activities. Targeted at Year 10 History Cold War studies but suitable for all high school students. Part 1- give students the word list sheet only for them to fill out (print the first two pages 2 into 1- half per student ) and get them to fill it out (guide as necessary). Part 2- give them the next 2 pages (print two into one again two sides per student) and get them to write the list of words they created in order to make a twisted version of this history story. Old Sarge here with a few words of wisdom. During the past several weeks there has been a drastic increase in violence towards police. As a retired police officer, I am appalled by what I have witnessed. To date it seems that the media as a whole has turned a blind eye towards the actual good that police perform and instead has focused on their own agenda. What about the police officer that digs in his pocket to help someone in need? Not newsworthy. The police officer that pulls a family from a burning building before the fire department arrives? Nope, they don’t make the headlines. The police officer that volunteers their time to assist community development? These things don’t get any published acknowledgment, so it’s like they don’t exist. And this isn’t even the first time in recent memory things went down this path. Let me tell you a story from my life in a blue uniform. In 1992, I was a young Police Sgt responding to a large fight in progress. This was 2 weeks after the riots in Los Angeles that happened in response to the Rodney King verdict. The never ending press coverage showing mob mentality was deeply etched in everyone’s minds. You can reason with an individual but when you get a group together, you get a mob mentality that can’t be reasoned with. I arrived at the scene and found there was a violent mob of approximately 300 people. This was not a mob attacking random individuals though. They werent burning and looting buildings. This was two rival fraternities that decided to have a rumble. They were battering each other with sticks and bats and batons. There were injured and bloody people everywhere.
