The Heart and Circulation - a Unit of Work

18 Files to support the teaching of work on the Heart and Circulation. Aimed at upper key stage 2 / key stage 3 but differentiated and adaptable activities make it suitable for other age groups and abilities. Includes: 1. A powerpoint that discusses the cells of the circulatory system, including how organ systems, such as the circulatory system are built from cells and tissues and the importance of respiration. 2. Teacher or revision notes covering the main points 3. 3 way differentiated activity on the differing structure of arteries, veins and capillaries. Includes colour diagrams. 4. Bone marrow and blood cells diagram. 5. Differentiated questions on the constituents of blood. Could be used for research homework or assessment. 6. Heart structure - a number of differentiated activities to suit a wide range of ages and abilities, including the naming of valves and chambers and explaining why the heart is a muscle. 7. Circulatory system diagram for labelling organs to get the idea of the scale and importance of the organ system. 8. The journey of a Red Blood Cell - storyboard activity, possibly for younger children, to understand the role of the RBC in the circulatory system. 9. Differentiated activity on the the effect of exercise on heart rate, including the use of the term respiration and therefore the link between circulatory and respiratory systems.

This foldable activity consists of 2 cootie catchers (or fortune tellers) for learning or revising the light and sight key terms. The children must try to figure out which key word of the light and sight topic is being described. It’s a great way to have students review their knowledge and not even realise that they’re learning! They’ll be engaged and excited with this addictive activity (as I am sure you will be too!). Taking a Journey Through the Digestive System with #GoogleExpeditions

Follow the journey of a raspberry through the digestive system. Pupils will start in the mouth, where they will learn about the role of teeth in digesting food. They will then take a trip down the oesophagus where they will be able to see the raspberry broken down. The raspberry will then be transported through the stomach, small intestine and large intestine. Using the worksheets, pupils can answer questions and solidify their learning as you take them on a journey through the digestive system. As a follow up activity, pupils can create a storyboard about Simon, a strawberry, who travels through the digestive system, starting in the mouth. The lesson plan contains the following content: 1. Science: Do people with longer leg bones jump further?

A PowerPoint lesson (with comments), a recording sheet and a set of extension cards. The lesson is part of Year 3/4 Science topic of Animals, including Humans. It offers children an opportunity to conduct their own investigation by measuring leg bones to see if there is a connection between the length of one's legs and their jump. Included colourful illustrations, a game, video links, measuring to the nearest cm practice, plenty of opportunities for discussion and an extension activity. The PowerPoint consists of 17 slides and most of the text is editable. The worksheet/ extension cards are in .pdf format and can't be edited.
