Fall Build a Sentence for Speech Therapy and Special Ed

Build a Sentence (18pages) - Autism and Special Needs, Speech therapy Forming sentences is very important for young learners or those with autism. This activity uses real-life pictures for easy recognition of common objects and sight words as sentence starters. It is perfect for early readers. This is also an activity to practice identifying the attributes of what, the number, and the color of a group of items. There are 12 groups of items. The student will match the corresponding picture to answer the questions - What? How Many? What Color? There are 2 ways to use this file: 1. Print the first 12 pages and use the pages as a “cut and paste” activity. The students will use glue to paste the correct answers where necessary. 2. Print all the pages on photo paper and laminate them. Cut out the pages containing the numbers and pictures. There are 2 pages that serve as boards for the types of answers (“what?”, “how many?”). Use Velcro on the back side of each card and in the middle of each blank square on the boards as well as on each square containing the questions. Thus the activity can be reused as many times as needed. *** Students can build 2 types of sentences: -using cards with words and hints (dots for the numers and pictures for the object words), then -using cards with only words, as shown on the title page. This is a great matching activity for K and 1st gr and for students with autism.

Foundation level skills/spec.ed/SEN reading and writing. A Christmas Carol

A specially adapted version of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens for foundation skills reading and writing and special education. My 5 week scheme of work covering staves 1-5 is included. Lessons are planned for 2 hours duration, but they are adaptable to suit your own needs. This complete lesson covers Stave 1 and includes all handouts, a presentation and worksheets for a variety of activities designed to increase vocabulary, assist with spelling, reading comprehension and creative writing - working as a group and individually. This resource means foundation level students can enjoy classic literature and improve their reading and writing skills at the same time. Suggested use of resource - Students watch presentation. Read the specially adapted text out loud. Put the relevant slide up on the power point. Go through the reading comprehension worksheet as a group. Read out handout - Meet Scrooge! Read out handout - Meet Bob Cratchit! Go through the spellings as a group. Students complete the sentences in handout using the spelling words. Discuss the creative writing prompt. Brainstorm students' ideas. Students write about their own response to the writing prompt. Students draw what they have written about. Further lessons will be available to cover the rest of the scheme of work.

Understanding who you are and how you communicate

Understanding who you are and how you communicate

As part of a PSHCE or SEND SOW this lesson(s) can be used to explore the different ways individuals learn, what the best way to learn is for them and also how communication can impact on themselves and others positively and negatively. This is a mini SOW that can take up to 3 lessons depending on your learners. The language and time taken can be adapted to fit the needs of all learners, I currently use this with a SEND group and talk them through the activities. This was originally designed to provide students who were struggling with social, emotional skills to develop self awareness and understanding which in turn would improve their ability to access learning in the classroom.
