Paired Texts - Australasia - Literal, Inference, Meaning and Summary questions

Paired Texts - Australasia - Literal, Inference, Meaning and Summary questions

This guided reading resource includes a pair of texts about Australasia with four comprehension skills sheets to complete, providing reading passages and questions that are challenging and engaging. Using the ‘LIMS’ approach, students work through Literal, Inference, Meaning and Summary questions to ensure that in the course of a week, they have practised skills in reading right across the Common Core. Text is differentiated and an answer scheme is provided. Suggested itinerary: Day 1 (30 mins) – Read both texts as a class. Highlight key parts. Discuss together. What have we learned? What do we want know more about? It is worth asking the students to write down any questions they have about the texts and putting them on display. Day 2 (30 mins) – Literal sheet Day 3 (30 mins) – Inference sheet (or meaning sheet if you prefer) Day 4 (30 mins) – Meaning sheet (or inference sheet if you prefer) Day 5 (45 mins) – Summary sheet and looking back at questions from the start of the week. This is the second in a series of Paired text resources looking at the seven continents of the world. Keep an eye on my store. Differentiation: All questions are the same, which should make marking easier! However, the texts differ, with asterisks in the bottom right corner indicating the reading level.

Reading activity Words in context/vocabulary treasure hunt Year 6

Reading activity Words in context/vocabulary treasure hunt Year 6

I was inspired by a maths treasure hunt I have seen on TES by Beckie- Stevie. This is a words in context/vocabulary treasure hunt. I printed these on paper (worked fine) and stuck them around the hall. Different colour on a different day. Children can either write down what the word means in context, or a suitable synonym. The children were very engaged, and I heard great conversations as a result. The lilac cards are very challenging on purpose, as there are children in our school, who need to be really challenged! I think the activity really forced children to read around the word, replace words etc. I asked the children to work independently, however this could be a paired activity as well. I have attached a basic answer sheet you could use. Partners can be split and then they can compare their answers at the end of the activity. The activity will easily last an hour (muddle the order you stick them up in). I used the google dictionary to go through answers. It was good because at a glance the children were able to see the definition, see the word used in a sentence and they were also able to see synonyms. Happy SATs revising to all us crazy Year 6 teachers!!

Tracking / Learner feedback sheet for GCSE English - any exam board

Tracking / Learner feedback sheet for GCSE English - any exam board

Tracking, individual targets and positive / developed and exam driven feedback all seem to be high priority for Ofsted and can be a daunting task to aim to fulfill. It required mass amount of regular , time consuming marking which is difficult to do on top of a full teaching timetable. I have found that by condensing all that down on to one handy sheet helps to make this task more manageable. This feedback sheet is designed to be used with the AQA exam board but can be used and altered in a way to suit you and / or the exam board you are using . I use this sheet once a term and stick it in the students folders so they have a regular feedback on their progress. It has gone down very well with management and Ofsted inspectors. The feedback sheet includes: Where they started - initial assessment scores - to show distance traveled. Where they aim to be - exam target Score for each question on the exam, including SPAG - I personally do 1 - 2 questions per term to show regular progress and tracking throughout the course. Space for written feedback and space for student feedback - to show student input into their own learning. Space for written feedback on overall behaviour and attendance per term. overall mock paper scores. I have found that by making all these areas fit on one sheet very useful in managing my time and feedback but also for the students to know they are on a journey and to have ownership of their learning. Be advised the TES previews do often distort the look of resources and this is not a true reflection. Hope it helps.
