This is a task which allows students to format their own birthday party spreadsheet. It is a costs spreadsheet which they have to do all of the functions and formulas for (although there is a differentiated worksheet which has some parts already complete and hints to aid the thinking of the students).
It can be used as an end of topic assessment for areas such as: spreadsheets, Excel software usage, flat file databases (then they could make a relational database in Access using this information), general ICT, accounting, budget managing and life skills. It could also be used as a baseline assessment and it is universal due to the fact it is based on organising a birthday party.
Skills that it tests are: basic - advanced formatting (which also helps with PowerPoint and Word), adding, subtracting, multiplying, IF statements, VLOOKUPS, data validation, absolute cell referencing, keeping to a budget and independent learning. I have used this very successfully for ECDL.
It can also be used as a fun task at the end of a topic which does still deliver on the new learning and progress at KS3 and can be adjusted to stretch the higher achievers or students at KS4.
Any questions please feel free to ask.
