8 Inspirational Colour Sketches

8 Inspirational Colour Sketches

These 8 lively, colourful pictures offer inspiration for story-writing, poetry-crafting, newspaper report inventing, and enhancement of the topics they reflect, which include: wild woods, migrating birds, ocean, sunset, jungle, wild animals (British and tropical), dragons, magic carpet rides, transport, myths and more. NB: I sketched and coloured the pictures by hand, adjusting them slightly with basic computer software, so expect spontaneity rather than professional artwork or machine neatness. I use them for all primary classes.

The Archaeology of Ancient Greece

The Archaeology of Ancient Greece

Introduction to the project and teaching resources Within this folder you will find a series of documents about Ancient Greece with a focus on daily life and houses. All of these materials are designed for cross-curricula teaching and cover the English, History, Maths, Science, Geography, and Art subjects of the National Curriculum. Please do not feel that you have to use all of these files and the associated activities, as they may not all be appropriate for your teaching or timetable. The materials include both background information to the subjects covered, and actual teaching materials, including various activities. These resources were conceived together with the intention of providing teachers with all of the information they would need to teach a topic on daily life in Ancient Greece. Thus some of the activities will require you, as the teacher, to have engaged with all of the background materials within your planning, even if you do not use them directly in your lessons. For example, presentation 20, which provides information and activities for the Science curriculum on Vision and Light, requires you to have read about Greek houses and the family, which is found in presentations 05, 07-10 and 14. All of the teaching activities have been designed to support the students’ core knowledge and skills as outlined in the National Curriculum. For example, presentation 01 covers the topic of archaeology as a discipline, including what Classical archaeologists study, and where they undertake their excavations. Within this presentation (01) there are two specific activities on slides 3-6. The Kmz* file (02) (for use in Google Earth), and Presentations 03 and 04, extend this topic into Maths and Geography activities that can be done both in and outside the classroom. These activities may be followed by presentation 05, which focuses on the settlement (Olynthus) that provides the basis of many of the other presentations about specific issues regarding houses, daily life and the family in Ancient Greece. Presentation 06 is a LEGO Education activity that is linked to presentations 01 and 05, and develops students’ work in the English, Art and Design subjects of the National Curriculum.

Dragons can be... Word-bank building sheet for dragon descriptions (Ys 3-6) + Guide Sheet

Dragons can be... Word-bank building sheet for dragon descriptions (Ys 3-6) + Guide Sheet

Children love this activity. Dragons can be sizzling-hot, ice-cold, fierce, friendly, clumsy, graceful - whatever the individual child wants them to be, and their exciting features, shown in the illustration, are sure to trigger a colourful array of possibilities, as your class dash down their descriptive word ideas on the lines. They’ll need to turn the sheet round as they go to follow the line angles - adding to the fun! Encourage able writers to add in similes under the lines, as demonstrated in the accompanying guide. Suggestions are provided there for warm-up and follow-on activities, as well as for words. See my other resources for more dragon-focused activities and supporting posters.

Watch Out for the Dragon! Descriptive writing sheet, 3 grades: R, Y1, Y2

Watch Out for the Dragon! Descriptive writing sheet, 3 grades: R, Y1, Y2

Watch out for the dragon - but what sort? Scary? Crazy? Hot and spiky? Red, green, wild, funny? Your Reception and KS1 children will be eager to express their ideas, both out loud and in writing. Never mind if their word is hard to spell - they can sound it out and give it a go, building confidence in their writing skills as they go. Not that dragons have to be scary, of course - ‘Watch out for the kind or friendly dragon!’ would be equally valid - as in: don’t miss him/her. The gender can also be changed. There are 3 versions here, of graded difficulty, the last inviting describing words for spikes and scales too, and ideas for the dragon’s favourite food. NB (1) Please note that my hand-drawn illustrations are sketchy. However, in my experience, children don’t mind or notice this. NB (2) Older/abler Yr 2s will welcome further lines, perhaps inviting similes, e.g. He’s as hot as a… or [colour] … as a. These could be squeezed in or written on the back, or the sheet could be manually adapted. More advanced versions coming here in due course.

Ideal end-of-term fun for classes of all ages, with scope for physical movement and multi-arts development. Once there was a dragon dressed in red. Red is just one example of the numerous colours featuring in these crazy dragon verses, which lend themselves to being enacted, and even sung to a made-up tune, as well as chanted and clapped. Under the Sea Poem Frame + Example, Y2-4

Under the Sea Poem Frame + Example, Y2-4

This intriguingly illustrated sheet sets children dreaming, and the simple line starters prompt them to think up words for their thoughts. Extra-keen writers can add further description about the sea - and anything else related - on the wavy lines below. An example version, showing just one of the infinite ways the poem could be written, is supplied on a separate sheet. Prepare your class by studying and discussing sea flora and fauna, treasure and detritus, mythical creatures and characters, and sounds, shapes and colours, too. Consider caves, sand and rocks, the rusty remains of ancient shipwrecks, picnic items washed away, bubbles, echoes - all sorts! Build up banks of describing words, imagery, action words and onomatopoeias as you go, but informally, keeping the atmosphere as free as the sea. Alliteration might crop up (e.g. shimmery and shiny) but don’t force it. Let individual creativity flow!

Shelf Life Pack: Chelsea Physic Garden

Shelf Life Pack: Chelsea Physic Garden

https://www.chelseaphysicgarden.co.uk/teaching-resources Shelf Life The Shelf Life resource pack is a cross curricular resource for teachers of pupils at all ages. Shelf Life is a collection of plants growing in the packaging of foods, drinks, cosmetics and medicines. Examples include a tomato plant growing from a bottle of tomato ketchup, wheat from a bag of bread, an orange plant from a carton of orange juice or a willow sapling from an aspirin bottle. It is a reminder of our reliance upon nature and prompts you to ask the question: How many plants have I used today? 15 years ago, Shelf Life was devised by Chelsea Physic Garden’s Education Department to illustrate the diversity of the plant kingdom and also to make the link between our everyday products and their plant origins. Many of the younger visitors to Chelsea Physic Garden (around 2,500 per year) are very surprised – and often quite disgusted – that their meals may have come from plants. When they see tomatoes in a ketchup bottle, potatoes growing in a crisp packet and mint in a toothpaste tube, the message sinks in. Our Shelf Life Resource Pack includes: • Information about 22 plants in our everyday lives - with plant profiles and tips on how to grow them and create your very own display • Games to try out • Curriculum-linked ideas and activities (e.g. the history of slavery and the evolution of packaging) • An extensive bibliography of links and suggested reading We have split the pack into 5 volumes This resource aims to encourage schools to grow their own Shelf Life and provides information about how to do this. There is background information on some easily-sourced and commonly found plants (growing tips and profiles - including all sorts of facts - botany, history, geography, food and nutrition and links to art, music and literature) in Volumes1, 2 and 3. In Volume 4 there are suggestions of classroom based activities to link Shelf Life with the curriculum at every key stage. In Volume 5 are suggestions of classroom based games to link Shelf Life with the curriculum at every key stage. • Volume 1: Aloe to Citrus (PDF/9.5MB) • Volume 2: Cotton to Peanut (PDF/7.6MB) • Volume 3: Pineapple to Wheat (PDF/8.8MB) • Volume 4: Activities section (PDF/7MB) • Volume 5: Games section (PDF/5MB) We welcome your feedback on these.
