Vendez la maison! (Home or Away: A place in the sun)

Vendez la maison! (Home or Away: A place in the sun)

This powerpoint and the accompanying worksheets is an oral activity for two groups of students. Each group has to try to sell one house to the teacher or a jury. Following the concept of the TV show Home or Away: A Place in the Sun, one of the houses is in the client’s homeland and the other is in a more exotic country. The groups will compete against each other to try to sell their house to the client, who has a specific profile and a set of demands that must be met by the house. The powerpoint allows for guided preparation of the task, then the groups research the house and its area for 30mn and prepare their speech. The winning group (most convincing, best-prepared, best oral skills) wins a prize. My students really enjoyed this concept!

Present, past, future conditional tenses trip advisor lesson

Present, past, future conditional tenses trip advisor lesson

This lesson concludes a series of lessons about a diamond robbery but can be used as a standalone lesson. The starter is a translation that recaps the story so far. Pretend Trip advisor reviews are used with an activity to work out what hotel has which facilities. A scaffolded speaking activity gets the pupils asking each other what activities they would like to do. There is also a tic-tac-toe activity with pictures of the activities - I usually divide the class in two for them to play against each other to say what they would like to do using the pictures only. You could differentiate by giving the lower ability the phrases. The pupils then read an email which has a reading comprehension worksheet and then work out where the accomplice is staying and where he is going to go using the trip advisor reviews and the passé composé and future tenses. There is a lot of material in this lesson. There is more than enough for high ability pupils to get through in one lesson but you may want to make it two lessons.

Diamond robber lesson focusing on conditional tense

Diamond robber lesson focusing on conditional tense

This lesson focuses on the conditional tense but includes the present, past (passé composé and imparfait) and future tenses too. Suitable for able year 9 upwards/ GCSE this is part of a series using the story of a diamond robbery to practise using different tenses together. The lesson can be used as part of the series (a whole term's worth!) or on its own. There is a starter, followed by an email from the very demanding girlfriend of the diamond robber asking for all the things she would like in her hotel. Pupils start by picking out simple details from the email, followed by a reading comprehension which is on the powerpoint or as a printable pdf with the email. This increases in difficulty so that pupils can work at their own pace. There is an extension task, spotting other tenses in the email and an odd one out plenary.

Les vacances du petit Nicolas- Sempé- Reading comprehensions Higher

Les vacances du petit Nicolas- Sempé- Reading comprehensions Higher

4 reading comprehensions exercises from "Les vacances du Petit Nicolas." Perfect for teaching the topic of holidays. The short stories reinforce all vocabulary seen (places, activities, opinions, suitcase items, use of different tenses). I have selected extracts and added a series of questions. As this is an authentic text, I would aim these activities for a higher group (from year 9 to year 11). Great to include a bit of French culture and literacy in your lessons. I have added a link to the trailer of the film (adapted from the short stories). Could be a good way of introducing the topic or as a way to engage pupils before the reading comprehension. **Timers and answers are included. **

Reading resource with incorporated worksheet - Gîte "Beaurepos"

Reading resource with incorporated worksheet - Gîte "Beaurepos"

I tried to recreate an ad for privately organised self-catering accommodation in the style of those found on a certain website, but using the brochure format. This is good for GCSE classes, and there are many pictures to help understanding, though some vocabulary could be prepared beforehand (see my free resource "on loue un gîte") This is mainly a set of reading comprehension activities, followed by a "written response" task, but could also be used to encourage the creation of a different brochure. There's a bit of a grammar focus (some simple future tense is used) as well, and via the (loisirs aux alentours) section, it is also culturally informative (about the Doubs region in the east of France) (Unfortunately, one garden photo on the front cover did not conform to the PDF creation, and looks more like an impressionist painting (and I could not fix it - the original photo is fine!) but you could just copy and paste another garden photo over it, if you wanted.)

Le passé composé en vacances - The French past tense on holidays with Mrs Vandertramp verbs.

Le passé composé en vacances - The French past tense on holidays with Mrs Vandertramp verbs.

This resource is an introduction on how to use the Mrs Vandertramp verbs in French past tense. It starts off by revising how to form the passé composé with verbs that take "avoir" as an auxiliary. There is an opportunity to formatively assess pupils' understanding on how to conjugate the past tense with avoir through a translation activity on MWBs, and the task is differentiated with support and challenge embedded within the instructions. Once the pupils are familiar with avoir verbs, the lesson moves on to introduce être verbs through the use of a song. The pupils are expected to write down the past participles for the être verbs that they see/hear in the video. Again this activity is differentiated by outcome, the verbs that the pupils are expected to find are colour-coded by traffic light colours. The pupils are also introduced to agreements of the past participles and tested on their understanding with a correct the errors activity. Finally, the main task of this lesson is a worksheet which is, again, differentiated by outcome. The pupils are given the choice on where they wish to start on the worksheet depending on how confident they feel. This sheet tests their understanding on which verbs take avoir or être. This lesson would fit seamlessly into a topic on holidays as all of the additional vocabulary is related to a holiday in Paris.

French GCSE holidays future tense _ 2 activity sheets with reading comprehension, vocab and trans

French GCSE holidays future tense _ 2 activity sheets with reading comprehension, vocab and trans

2 activity sheets to support pupils talking about holidays using the future tense. 1) There is some translation and verb manipulation to begin with and these verbs then feature in an extended reading which is accompanied by reading comprehension questions and an activity to find the A* language constructions within the text. The final activity is translation into French, recycling all the earlier language work. 2) A reading comprehension in the future tense: key vocabulary in a match up activity, gap fill, some A* facilitating constructions and a written task with a check list of complex language to include.
