Year 5 Materials Science Planning and Resources

This resource includes 4 Smart Notebook flip charts that took me six lessons to cover (half a term). The flip charts include easy to follow instructions as well as a clear structure to each session with practical actitivies. We gave our science a book twist so the flip charts link to Narnia, but could be changed to any fictional story or location. Lessons inlcude ‘Bright Ideas Time’ which is used to promote scientific discussion. Science Structure Strips are also inlcuded in this resource for investigative work. Objectives Covered Include: Compare and group together everyday materials on the basis of their properties, including their hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity (electrical and thermal), and response to magnets. Explain that some changes result in the formation of new materials, and that this kind of change is not usually reversible, including changes associated with burning and the action of acid on bicarbonate of soda. Know that some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution, and describe how to recover a substance from a solution.

Following the success of these Structure Strips for Scientific writing in our school, I wanted to share the resources with others. Designed to give children the ‘ideal’ structure of a scientific write up, it provides children with a stimulus and tips for what to include in each section, along with tips and success criteria. These have been used by both Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 students with great success! Each page has four strips which can printed and stuck in to the margin of the student’s book. The two sheets combined create a well structured and informative double page science write up.

Identify Reversible and Irreversible Changes (Complete Practical Lesson)

This is a complete practical lesson for lower KS2 on the difference between reversible and irreversible changes. The lesson begins with an open-ended ‘odd one out’ activity intended to engage children’s deeper thinking and elicit appropriate scientific vocabulary and verbal reasoning. Depending on your school’s health and safety policy, you may or may not be able to do the very first teacher demonstration, where you burn a small amount of methylated spirit in a plate (then show them the empty plate after it has burned away!) If not, videos can easily be found on YouTube. For the 3 child-led practical parts of the lesson you will need: olive/sunflower/vegetable oil vinegar (any) sand filter paper funnels Alka-Seltzer tablets (one per pair) or similar There is then a short activity to finish off with - differentiated three ways and with an open-ended extension question to keep any ‘fast finishers’ busy! The plenary activity challenges pupils to use what they have learned to discuss whether a real-world chemical change is reversible or irreversible. Give the blue cards to one partner and the yellow ones to the other. The partners will then have to work together to arrive at a conclusion.

There is a blackout and you are stuck without power for a few days. Help your family by building a solar powered oven to cook your food. Build a solar oven that can get to over 80’C using everyday materials. This is a fun and easy activity that can be done by anyone that can use a pair of scissors. The end result is incredibly effective and can easily be extended to learn about scientific measurements and controls. The worksheet is self-contained on one sheet of paper minimising the amount of printing required. Instructions are included on the worksheet.
