2D shapes are usually taught first in the classroom. Children learn that 2D shapes are flat with length and width but no depth and include circles, triangles, squares and rectangles as examples. They also learn to define and identify different 2D shapes using their properties of the numbers of sides and vertices the shapes have.
3D shapes can be a little trickier to learn. Children learn that 3D shapes differ to 2D shapes as they are solid and have length, width and depth and include spheres, cubes, pyramids and prisms as examples. They also learn to define and identify different 3D shapes using their properties of the numbers of faces, edges and vertices as well as their corresponding nets.
