Perfect for AS and A2 AQA biology. I used created and used these two packs of questions for my exam revision and found them extremely useful, they can also be cut up and used as a stick and match task, or as flashcards. Roughly 35 pages of questions in each pack, so useful as an end of lesson review to be filled out throughout the year or to give to students as a pre-exam preparation task. Each question links specifically to a section of the AQA specification.

Transcription and Translation from DNA to coded traits worksheet

Worksheet that utilizes the imaginary purple people eater monsters to give students practice transcribing and translating to identify amino acids that code for specific traits. For added fun, students are asked to draw the monsters coded for by the DNA. The worksheet is 12 pages so that each student may have a unique monster! There is a full answer key included for ease of checking student work. Additionally, I have included an excel sheet of the DNA, mRNA, and Amino Acid codes for each trait for ease of making additional monster combinations.

Science end of year quiz

This is a quiz i have made and used with year 7 through to year 11 and the students love it! Half the rounds are science related (periodic table, baby animals, biology, famous scientists, music, sport, brands and more!) I split the students into groups of 3 and keep a running total of marks from each round to give them a bit of competition. The answers are on the powerpoint in the note section so don’t panic! I find it’s a great and engaging, educational end to the year.

Sex-linkage

A fully-resourced lesson that looks at the inheritance of genes that have their loci on the sex chromosomes. This lesson includes a concise, detailed lesson presentation (27 slides) and a exam question worksheet. The lesson begins by introducing the students to the idea that the 23rd pair of chromosomes in humans are not a homologous pair. Students will see that the Y chromosome is smaller than the X chromosome and will be challenged to explain why males are more likely to suffer from diseases which are carried on the X chromosome. Moving forwards, students are shown how to draw genetic diagrams to carry out crosses including sex-linked characteristics. Time is taken to ensure that students are clear on how to write the parent genotypes and gametes before starting the cross as this is an area where mistakes are commonly made. There are progress checks throughout the lesson so that students can assess their understanding. This lesson has been written for students studying A-level Biology but can be used with those students studying Biology at GCSE where this topic has now entered some of the specifications.

This game can be played in class or as revision using the rules stated on the board. Students work their way though the specification as they move around the board, learning key facts, completing structural drawings of key components and touching on some lab contents including statistics and variables. The game is easy to download on a power point presentation and once created can be used over and over again.
