THE CASE OF THE SHRINKING LAKE OF AFRICA - LAKE CHAD

THE CASE OF THE SHRINKING LAKE OF AFRICA - LAKE CHAD

This unit is basically about an inland water system (Lake and connected River catchments and inflows). However, it crosses into other study areas such as - the SAHEL, desertification, global warming, climate change as environmental issues. At the human level it connects with problems relating to population increases affecting levels of income and development. As an additional issue it introduces the need for emergency aid programs and for overall plans for development. There is opportunity to search on the WEB for additional information. The shrinking of the water coverage within the Lake Chad Basins is seen through the series of Satellite photographs which allows students to follow the process by remote sensing. An added obstacle to development and living condition improvements is the presence and impact of Boko Haram within the the Lake Chad catchment area of Nigeria and along the borders of the Lake Chad Basins. At the foundation level this unit could be studied at Primary School/Lower Secondary levels as “the shrinking lake”. At Middle to Upper Secondary levels the material could be used to consider issues of Emergency Aid Relief (UN/Oxfam/Medicine sans Frontieres/Plan/World Food Relief/UN Refugee Programmes) . It also introduces research possibilities into global warming, global climate change, ITC/pressure cell changes that could be affecting global climates. Use the maps, diagrams, photographs to encourage in class discussion and debate. The attachments provide the flexibility for in class or home use by providing hard copies. The choice of black and white or colour attachments are provided. While this is basically a study of inland rivers and lakes its potential use is much broader.

DESERTIFICATION IN THE SAHEL OF AFRICA -CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES

DESERTIFICATION IN THE SAHEL OF AFRICA -CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES

In a world where populations pressures place strains on ecological systems the added strain of desertification adds an additional problem. The SAHEL of Africa is an area between the northern desert (Sahara) and the wetter climate zones of the savanna lands. It spans twelve African countries. Most of these have high levels of population pressure and growth. Through the use of maps, diagrams, photographs and selected situations this unit explains why the SAHEL is the major region where desertification is occurring. The unit explores the causes (natural and human) and recognises the consequences. Many of the pages are designed so that teachers can screen them and discuss them in class. The attachment pages are provided so that teachers can have flexibility in how they are used i.e., within the classroom or as individual home study activities. The story of the headman in the abandoned village of Northern Nigeria is provided so that students can gain some idea of the personal impact those affected by desertification experience. The pages providing posters (Oxfam and Unicef) indicate the emergency situationS faced by countries within the SAHEL. The aid programmes are created to assist in the short term. Coping with desertification in the longer term requires more complex and detailed planning.

Around the World/Cultural Activity-Ghana Music

Around the World/Cultural Activity-Ghana Music

Hands down my students’ favorite lessons that we do in my classroom are the “Magic Airplane Ride” lessons. We get in our airplane, fasten our seatbelts, and then take off and visit other countries while learning about the music, art, customs, food, and culture of each country. The students look out for red and yellow stars, which take you to locations in Google Earth or to videos. This is a great resource for multicultural and “Trip Around the World” lessons. These lessons are popular with all my students-kindergarten through 5th grade. This lesson is a trip to Ghana. Each lesson includes links that take you to locations in Google Earth so the kids can see the places. Once you land, click and drag on the screen to drive down the street and see the city. Sometimes the airplane can even go inside buildings! There are also video links throughout the lesson to make the topics covered come to life by letting the kids see and hear what they are learning about. Each video will open in a ViewPure window so there will not be any advertisements at the beginning of the video. Covered in this presentation: • The location of Ghana, and the capital city • The president and president’s house • The flag of Ghana and the coat of arms with its meaning. • Languages • Noted sites in Ghana with Google Earth links. • Clothing, including kente cloth, its history and how it’s made • Ghanaian foods • Music and dance • Obwisana-Children’s song game with links to learn the song and the game • Tue Tue-Children’s song with links to learn the song and the dance.

NGSS Aligned: Simulating A United Nations Panel on Trophy Hunting

NGSS Aligned: Simulating A United Nations Panel on Trophy Hunting

B. SUGGESTED USES Prior Knowledge: Students do not necessarily require much prior knowledge. However, for students to understand, and communicate, some of the important ecological, conservationist arguments, they benefit from a conceptual understanding of food webs, ecological interactions, and natural selection. They should be able differentiate between credible and non-credible sources, and will benefit from information about effective communication/persuasion skills. Students adept in PowerPoint or Google Slides may benefit as well. Implementing the Lesson: In a class of 24 or so, I usually make 5 or 7 students judges (an odd number ensures one side wins), and the remaining students are divided up (somewhat) evenly into the pro and against positions. If there are more students than positions, I allow some positions (economist, ecologist, conservationist, and land owner) to be represented by more than one student. Because the project incorporates so many of the concepts within ecology, I spend a significant amount of time on it. I usually give students two or three classes to do research and work on their presentation (judges are working on their tasks as well). I encourage students to be pithy with their presenetion to avoid having the process last too many classes. Then, depending on the length of the presentations, and the number of questions that the judges ask during each presentation, the UN simulation can take a full class or two. I allow the presenters to begin their reflection paper in class, while the judges deliberate. Finally, the judges announce their decision, with an explanation. I allow the judges to make any decision, with any stipulations, that they deem fitting. In my experience, the students really enjoy this activity, and learn a lot about an important issue. African History before colonialism_(breaking the stereotypes) KS3 and 4

African History before colonialism_(breaking the stereotypes) KS3 and 4

This resource is part of a series of lessons I created, to support the history and music section of a themed curriculum unit on, ‘the Caribbean’ back in 2011. I decided to start from the much needed history of pre-colonial Africa for two reasons. The first being, to put music from different Caribbean countries into context and the second, was to try to dispel the racist myths that the media and society portrays about Africa, which has a detrimental effect on the psyche and self esteem of millions of people all over the world. This should be, in my opinion, a statutory part of the curriculum as African history underpins world history. This resource could be a stand alone unit to support black history month, history, geography or citizenship lessons.
