Armed Forces Day or militarism?

This is a creative way to tackle controversial questions surrounding Remembrance, the armed forces, war and militarism. This attractive poster and the accompanying activities elicit debate and discussion about the reality and ethics of military involvement in British society. Armed Forces Day is a particularly relevant time to open up this discussion in your Citizenship, PSHE lessons and meet your SMSC requirements. It also lends itself to Philosophy for Children sessions at primary or secondary. Everything shown is ‘real’ - something that does happen on the streets of Britain. We’ve provided the resource as a PDF, an image and a clickable webpage (meaning you can click on individual parts of the image and see a related video, report or news story; students could explore this individually or be led through it on an a whiteboard. The lesson could also be used for PSCHE/PSCE or life skills. A range of implicit and explicit extraction tasks are included and all are focused on AO1. The focus is on world population growth, sizes and types of families, the advantages and drawbacks of being part of a large family, the ethics of encouraging people to have lots of children and the question of who should pay the cost of managing and supporting people who plan to have large families. Freedom City Comics learning framework

Freedom City Comics presents snapshots of the history of civil rights and politics on Tyneside. Each chapter focuses on a different era of the history of people and events in Newcastle and the North East. In addition to the free 16-page comic (https://research.ncl.ac.uk/fccomics/readthecomic/), we’ve worked with teachers to make this learning framework for KS2 and KS3. All the activities are designed as springboards for your own projects, lessons, and activities. This learning framework includes: outlines of suggested activities suggested links to National Curriculum KS2 and KS3, including ‘I Can…’ statements printable resources including: storyboard templates, writing frames, archive materials, biographical factfiles artists’ draft pages, to give young comics creators a look behind the scenes of how Freedom City Comics was made. End of Term Tutor Time / PSHCE

End of Term Tutor Time / PSHCE

A fun and creative Citizenship / Tutor Time project lesson for students in the last week of term. Could be used for activities week in Humanities or just as a reward lesson the last time you see your class for the summer. Very easy to set up - you will just need a few balloons, string, sellotape, old clothes, felt tips and a any other boxes/construction materials you can find (just things that would usually be thrown in the recycling). The students work in small groups to research and recreate a famous political icon (info sheets and clip tasks included - all instructions on Powerpoint). The lesson can last as long as you want it to, and I gave prizes of sweets at the end for the best one - but that’s optional! My students really enjoyed it and we took pictures at the end for the school website. Hopefully yours will love it too. I’m going to be adding lots more free PSHCE lessons over the coming months.
