What happened in Chernobyl - Reading Comprehension Text #GoogleExpeditions

This Reading Comprehension worksheet is suitable for upper intermediate to proficient ESL learners. The text gives an account of all the tragic events that took place during the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident. After carefully reading the text, students are required to complete some comprehension exercises including: True or False exercises, a definitions match exercise, a fill-in-the-gaps exercise, a fun crossword and engage in an in class discussion over nuclear energy, radiation and it’s effects on human health. The vocabulary used in the text is rather advanced and can also be used for IGCSE, TOEFL or IELTS vocabulary building purposes. The handout can be completed in class or assigned for homework. Ideally, this handout could be used along a #GoogleExpeditions NASA virtual reality trip! A full answer key is included.

I’ve created this resource for a group of learners with learning difficulties. Following a review where the language used was too complicated I’ve added a simplified version and the pub file (in comic sans), as well as two simple questionnaires… Staying safe online and how encryption works is hard to explain, so I’ve tried to demonstrate these in a simple and accessible way. The resource contains 7 pages, and it takes the learners through a short and simple journey in understanding how to keep away from fraudulent online content. The resource can be used as part of an E-Safety lesson or in an assembly.

QUESTIONS EXPLORED • How has social media changed the way we interact with each other? • Are we becoming more or less social as technology allows us to make friends all over the world? • Is technological connection allowing us to feel more connected? • What is the ‘filter bubble’ and how is it affecting our understanding of the world? • Are ‘fake news’ and algorithmic conditioning something that we can prevent? • Is social media a tool that we can learn to use rather than depend upon? AIMS AND OBJECTIVES Each lesson starts with a short film which serves as the platform for the lesson’s discussions, allowing students to engage firstly with the ideas raised in the film and then develop insight and engagement in the topic. Students will practise skills of critical thinking & questioning, deep listening and empathy building. Lessons will explore the pros and cons of global connectivity through social media, examining the human and environmental impact of this growing technology. Students will examine the changing nature of connection in a modern world, learning to question and engage in a range of connections that we are forming through our use of social media. Students will understand how people use science in their daily lives, including when caring for their environment and living things. Kirchhoff's whispers (a circuit building game)

Put pupils into 6 groups at 6 stations round the room. Pupils are given a card with a circuit diagram on it, they must build the diagram and then flip over the card. At the next station, they have to draw the circuit diagram and then take apart the circuits. At the next station they have to build the circuit based on the diagram they see, then throw away the diagram. They game continues for as long as you want it to! This assesses and develops their circuit building and drawing skills. It also shows them why it's so important to draw circuit diagrams carefully. I've printed this double sided, then laminated so that they can draw the circuit on the back in whiteboard pen. Enjoy! Please review!

A simple website research/inquiring challenge - students use the Ducksters website to help answer the questions. First I introduced the topic of the Industrial Revolution (Our unit of study is on Technology so I felt this is an era of history that needs to be taught as it changed our World). I had my class (Grade 3) do this using one Chrome book between 2 but it would work just as well as an individual research activity. The questions were written to not only improve reading skills, but also encourage some deeper thinking of the impact of this significant era in history.

Parts of Computer Scavenger Hunt Purpose : At the end of this Scavenger hunt students will be able to learn about the working and importance of various parts of computer with its vocabulary. 1. Print the 12 Scavenger Hunt cards on card stock or brightly -colored paper and cut them apart along the black lines. 2. Make copies of the Scavenger Hunt questions worksheet. Each student needs a copy. 3. Place the Scavenger Hunt cards around your classroom where students will be able to find them. You can put them on chairs, on the computer keyboard, on the back of your classroom door, on the sides of student desks, on the chalkboard or wherever you like. 4. Students have to search the room and find all of the sentence cards to answer the questions. You can differentiate by having students work alone or with a classmate.
