Black Powder by Ally Sherrick - Teachers' resource pack

Background notes, class activities, discussion topics and writing prompts to support class reading/study of Black Powder by award-winning children’s author, Ally Sherrick. The book, written for children of 9+ and published by Chicken House Books, tells the story of how two cousins, Tom Garnett and Cressida Montague, both Catholics but from very different backgrounds, get caught up in the infamous Gunpowder Plot of 1605. It has won two awards - the Historical Association’s Young Quills Award 2017 and the North Somerset Teachers’ Book Award 2017 (in the ‘Moving on’ category) and been shortlisted for eight others. The notes include a brief synopsis, a short essay by the author on her inspiration for the story, four classroom activities linked to the themes and historical background of the story - for example on spies and spying; religious persecution and prejudice and three topics for extended discussion/written work - for example on heroes, villains and anti-heroes. Key themes which the story and activities link into include: courage and cowardice, bullying and prejudice, family and friendship and acceptance of grief and separation from loved ones.

Separating person and action

During the sessions, the facilitator is encouraged to allow the participants to think about the topic, express their viewpoints, share their experiences and explore its applicability in day to day life. The facilitator would allow the participants to arrive at their own conclusions, rather than imposing his views or opinions – they could even be different from the thoughts given here. DESCRIPTION (Thoughts such as, what does separating person and action mean, what are they all about and what its different facets are, may enable the facilitator understand it better. Some such thoughts about separating person and action are given below.) It is about trying to separate the action from the person. Presents Wordsearch Sheet Starter Activity Keywords Cover Gifts Parties Christmas

Presents Wordsearch Sheet Starter Activity Keywords Cover Gifts Parties Christmas

Wordsearch Puzzle sheet of keywords on the theme of ‘Presents’. Powerpoint so can be used on the board or printed as a worksheet. Includes space for students to explain the keywords and suggested extension activities. Can take 10 minutes or an hour, depending on which activities the students complete. Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen. The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!
