Ancient Kingdom of Benin Topic Unit Plan (6 Weeks)

This resource has been planned for a 6-week Half-Term. It connects the curriculums for Design Technology, Geography, Art & Design, English, and History. Children will investigate the Ancient Kingdom of Benin, as outlined in the 2014 National Curriculum of England History standards. The English units that are included are Narrative Texts (involving elephant hunting), Persuasive Texts (about returning stolen art to modern Nigeria), Information Texts (about poaching), and Explanation Texts (about artistic choices on a commemorative Oba head). Units are also available separately, lasting for one week each: Outcome 1: Design the head of an Oba (English, Art, Design Technology) Outcome 2: Write a persuasive text about returning stolen art from Ancient Benin (English, History, Art) Outcome 3: Write a Narrative Text about Bravery (English, History) Outcome 4: Write an Information Text about Elephant Poaching (History, Geography, Science, English) Outcome 5: Design a Thumb Piano (History, Art, Design Technology, English) **Link also included to digital file for editing and sharing on learning platforms such as Google Classroom and Seesaw.

The worksheet asks them to list equipment and keywords, to list three things they were good at and one they could improve on, and to also list transferable skills. (e.g. resilience, patience etc) Excellent to evidence self assessment in their sketchbook! Cezanne Venn Diagram. Art, Maths & Literacy! It's not always easy to introduce maths and literacy into an art lesson but by using this Venn Diagram for analysis you are doing just that. Pupils write about each picture and then in the middle of the diagram write what the similarities between the two artworks are. Simple!
