Communities and Cities

Communities and Cities

A PowerPoint of activities based on communities and cities/urbanisation. This includes: Pictures of various communities (rural, urban and suburban) that can be used for a warmer quiz introducing the subject of different communities. Smaller versions of each picture (4 x one page) which can be printed out and used for sorting activities (I had 3 teams sort them and make a poster using them to compare characteristics of the 3 different types of community at the start of my unit on communities). A maths lesson on rounding which compares 5 large cities. This was used to raise awareness of the rapid increase in urbanisation across the world. A table for students to organise their rounded figures and fill in information about each city. Pictures of each city - printed and used by the students to complete their table. The students then used their tables to make bar charts comparing the population of the 5 featured cities.

Refugees and Disease

Refugees and Disease

A lesson based on personal experiences working in Calais around disease and health of transient and persecuted communities. Appreciate all may not agree with any sentiments although I have tried to make it unbiased or a depiction of my experience and truth and that of the people I met working and living in Calais at least. Moving video at first - warn students about this and watch before, to see if appropriate to show to your group.

TB Top Down Development: W.H.O End TB

TB Top Down Development: W.H.O End TB

This lesson uses the basic pages of the original WHO documents for students to independently research via sentence finishers from these papers. It is good for comprehension and independent learners and gaining confidence with official documents. I used it for year 8 UK children who managed very well. I have attached all the other documents but not all are necessary, students only need the 3 summary pages for the 3 pillars from the "End_TB_brochure" pages 8, 9 and 10. If doing this with older students or G&T you could print out some extra info from these packs.

Ebola 2 lessons

Ebola 2 lessons

This is 2 lessons about Ebola the more recent outbreak and clean up efforts. It looks at development indicators along side the disease. The second lesson focuses on a TED talk by TV's doctor Javid who worked for MSF on the clean up. The teacher reads the story and the students draw what is being said to them. They really connect with the story in this way and have very positive results.
