Group 7 - The Halogens

Group 7 - The Halogens

This lesson introduces the halogens. It gives general information into their naming and uses linked to their properties. Using an animation it shows how the covalent bond is formed to allow the Halogens to be diatomic. Students are then lead through a step by step guide to explaining the reactivity of the Halogens with regards to their electrons and distance from nucleus. Displacement is explained using a simple anecdote. The experiment is provided if you wish to attempt this with your students. After explaining / practical there are equations questions to test the students learning. Plenary is exam style questions.

Writing ionic equations

Writing ionic equations

A fully-resourced lesson that includes a lesson presentation (20 slides) and a differentiated worksheet. The lesson uses a step-by-step method to guide students through the process of writing net ionic equations. Students will learn the meaning of a spectator ion and be able to identify them within an equation so that they can be removed when writing the final net ionic equation. The lesson focuses on writing these equations for neutralisation and precipitation reactions, with the former being a very common question in assessments. This lesson has been written for GCSE students (14 - 16 year olds)

Differentiated Learning Outcomes For AQA Combined Science Chemistry Unit 1

Differentiated Learning Outcomes For AQA Combined Science Chemistry Unit 1

This resource breaks down the first unit of the Chemistry course for AQA Combined Science: Trilogy into differentiated learning outcomes. This is for teachers and students to support them in assessing their learning and identifying what is required to develop their responses and to achieve a higher level. This resource can be used to guide teacher assessment and feedback, peer assessment and feedback or individual student reflection and feedback. Broadly speaking, Level 1 translates to grades 1-3 of the new GCSE grading system, Level 2 is roughly 4-6 and Level 3 aiming at grades 7-9. This is only a sample of one unit, but generally if students are repeatedly hitting level 3 criteria across the entire GCSE course, then it is likely that they will be achieving grades 7-9 in their exams. This resource is an example of the entire course breakdown in the same format, split into the three areas (Biology, Physics and Chemistry). Ideally, the use of all of the differentiated success criteria or learning outcomes would be embedded alongside the learning right the way through to the exams at the end of Year 11.

Compound Chemistry Quiz

Compound Chemistry Quiz

Quiz used for a form-time activity with Y7, though it could be used with any group. The answers were around the room on various compound chemistry posters, although you could do this using laptops, with students finding the answers on the compound interest website! 2 of the answers came from the student passports for the group that were stuck on the wall, so you will need to change those questions.
