Our Shared Humanity: Lesson Plan & Film

"Students watch the short film, "My Enemy, My Brother," by Ann Shin, which follows two former enemy soldiers as they meet twenty years after battle under extraordinary circumstances. In this lesson, students examine human connections across cultural divides and explore the themes of bravery and peace. In a classroom discussion, students consider what it means to act from one's conscience in the face of pressure to conform. Reflective writing prompts are also included for students to demonstrate their understanding of the story." English and Spanish versions of the lesson plan are available for download.

Since two bombs obliterated the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and ended the Second World War, nuclear weapons have been considered the ultimate deterrent. Have they made the world a safer place? Today, nine countries possess around 16,300 nuclear weapons. As a historic deal aims to stop Iran from joining them, this is a selection of stories which look at some of the key issues. At The Day we look at stories, explore the issues behind them and consider different opinions on what is happening. There are activities designed for homework or classwork, an explanation of difficult words and debate questions. Drones in Afghanistan: Why can't Aymel fly his new kite?

Aim: To gain an understanding of drones and how they affect children’s rights. This circle time lesson explores the life of Aymel, a boy from the village of Dadal in Afghanistan. Pupils will learn about human rights and the effect armed drones had on Aymel’s life. The true story behind this lesson was shared by Raz, a member of the Afghan Peace Volunteers. This is Workshop 1 of Fly Kites Not Drones and can be run as one session or as two shorter sessions. See more at www.flykitesnotdrones.org Objectives to understand a number of rights from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to practise spoken language skills, listening and cooperation in their group to explore empathy with people from a different culture to understand what an armed drone is and be able to explain how it can affect children’s rights to recognise that a moral choice is made when a drone is used to attack people.
