Statistics: (S1) Normal Distribution 3 - Backwards and Further Problems (+ worksheets)

This is the third of four lessons on the normal distribution, which builds on the first two lessons. This is your A/A* material, looking at different types of questions and problems. This is an excellent resource, with lots and lots of excellent teaching slides, 21 slides. Specifically this lesson is for teaching about how to work backwards and different questions. It does touch on linear combinations, so I recommend teaching that first (also available from my shop) and looks in detail at little issues/ mistakes that people can make. This is a vital lesson for your top end students and gives less able students more time to practise the normal distribution. I have therefore included two worksheets (exam questions) aimed at different abilities students and then come with accompanying mark schemes. I have used the PowerPoint slides to structure the lesson and have found this is one of best teaching topics and I have been very successful in getting ALL pupils to understand the normal distribution and feel confident for ALL types of questions that they may have to face. This is an excellent resource, with lots and lots of excellent teaching slides, 21 slides. Specifically this lesson is for teaching what is the normal distribution is, the criteria for using it and how and HOW TO STANDARDISE, and again how to use look up tables to solve problems that are in a standard normal form having standardised. I have also included questions I often used with accompanying mark scheme. I have used the PowerPoint slides to structure the lesson and have found this is one of best teaching topics and I have been very successful in getting ALL pupils to understand the normal distribution and feel confident for ALL types of questions that they may have to face. S3 Estimation and Confidence Intervals Topic Mat

A mat to summarise key concepts from the S3 topic Estimation and Confidence Interval (Edexcel). This one is quite big so I put it onto A3 paper! I also include a suggestion for how the mat could be filled out. I usually use it as a plenary โ€“ ask the pupils for the key ideas from the lesson and collectively fill in sections over a sequence of lessons. At the end of a topic they have a topic mat from which to revise from. I also photocopy them on different coloured paper so they act as dividers in studentsโ€™ folders.

Mean and standard deviation

This presentation focuses on what standard deviation really is. We look at some examples of data that all have the same mean, but where the variation in data is different. This enables us to see how the standard deviation can be useful and why we need to square the values before square rooting. A good visual representation to enhance understanding of what the standard deviation of a set of data means.

Statistics 1 Revision - Lock Puzzle with Answers

Statistics 1 Revision Lesson - Mixture of Questions that all lead to opening a coded lock. Topics include Standard Deviation, Stem and Leaf, Expectation and Variance, Permutations, Venn Diagrams. I use a wooden box that I made with a cheap chain around it and the colour 'Bosvision' coded lock from amazon. I little bit of an expense but worth it.

These are an attempt to break from the monotony of past papers in the run up to exam season. I have taken 2 questions from past papers and put them on one sheet; I will photocopy onto A3 for students to have a go in groups and discuss. The aims/rules etc are all listed if you wish to follow them and hopefully they all make sense. I have also provided answers.
