T E A C H I N G I D E A S:
I always kick off my multiplication/arrays unit with a big box of Cheerios! My students create different arrays out of Cheerios right on their desktops. While they're showing the array with these yummy manipulatives, I'm writing the accompanying number sentences on the smartboard. (For example, "Show me an array of 3 x 4."... I'll write 3 x 4 = ______ and also 3 + 3 +3 + 3 = ______.)
Extend the activity by having students brainstorm other arrays in their surroundings and then make an anchor chart to record their examples. (i.e. ice cube trays, classroom mailboxes, etc.) OR, have students create a "Real World Array Booklet" to record their own examples and illustrations.
Have fun with arrays in your classroom!
