Solving Quadratic Identities

Solving Quadratic Identities

Students learn how to solve quadratic identities by completing the square and equating terms. As learning progresses students are challenged to solve identities where the coefficient of b is odd and in the form a(x+b)^2 + c. At the start of the lesson students arrange six expressions written in the form (x + b)2 + c in order of their smallest possible value. In the plenary students are challenged to match a range of identities with their equal terms. Differentiated Learning Objectives All students should be able to solve a quadratic identity in the form (x + b)^2 + c by completing a square. Most students should be able to solve a quadratic identity in the form (x + b)^2 + c by completing a square and equating terms. Some students should be able to solve a quadratic identity in the form a(x + b^)2 + c. Mr Mathematics’ annual members have instant access to all lessons across Key Stage 3 and 4. Termly GCSE assessments are also available to monitor student’s progress. Algebra: Quadratic Graphs 2 - Gradients & Other Problems (+ resources)

Algebra: Quadratic Graphs 2 - Gradients & Other Problems (+ resources)

This is second of two whole lessons on teaching the various aspects of quadratic graphs containing the various aspects introduced with the new 9-1 GCSE syllabus. The first lesson being the introduction is important to go through before this lesson. They are available together as a bundle. This is a substantial PowerPoint, with starters, links to video's I use, Questions, Learning objectives, key words, loads of examples etc... NOTE: Feel free to browse my shop for more excellent free and premium resources, and as always please rate and feedback, thanks.

Quadratics Matching

Quadratics Matching

This takes students through factorising quadratics, solving them and onto completing the square, including solving quadratics that won't factorise nicely. Designed as starters/plenaries/assess the learning activities.

Quadratic Equations Worksheet Pack

Quadratic Equations Worksheet Pack

This pack was designed for one-to-one work but translates well to whole class work as well. I have found it useful to complete the work with a computer graphing package alongside - students can immediately see the solutions to their equations on the graph. Worksheets cover: Expansion of two and three binomials; Factorisation of quadratics (simple and harder - coefficient of x^2 higher than 1); solving by factorisation (simple and harder - coefficient of x^2 higher than 1); identifying whether a factorisation involves one or two brackets; Quadratic Formula; Completing the Square; Simplifying Algebraic Fractions and Quadratic Inequalities. An answer pdf is included, with my handwritten solutions to the questions. I have worked through all of the questions but if you see a mistake, please let me know. Questions range in difficulty and I have tried to include some tricky numbers towards the end of each exercise, to help students develop strategies to deal with harder numbers - particularly useful for the non-calculator papers. All the pages have an indication as to whether the topic is applicable to Foundation and Higher, or Higher only.
