For those using the Texas Instruments Ti-84 graphing calculator. I made this sheet with screen shots for my grade 9 class who were being introduced to this calculator for the first time. It shows them how to input the equation, look at the table of values, change the window and find required key points.

Completing the Square 1 (Loop Cards)

I love to start one-to-one tutorials/interventions with a loop card activity. They are also excellent when working with small groups or as a starter or plenary for a whole class. Note that the questions have been carefully selected so that they provide good coverage of this sub-topic and so that the opportunities for students to guess answers are minimised.<hr>Colour coding: All my loop cards are colour-coded to indicate the approximate level of the questions: KS2 – red and orange KS3/GCSE Foundation – orange and green GCSE Higher – green, blue and purple<hr>Further information: In this download there are four sets of similar cards and a student chooses one of the sets and sorts them into order by answering the questions. Then they try to do it faster using a different set, which has the same questions, but a different sort order 😃 My favourite use of loop cards is for two students to have different versions of the cards and race each other. They then check their answers, shuffle, swap packs and race again (quickest overall time wins). More instructions are included in the download. Algebra for Everyone Algebra for Everyone is a 67 page booklet (including answers), written in clear, easy to understand English and makes no assumptions about your prior mathematical knowledge (apart from being able to +, -, x, ÷). We begin with very basic (but key) algebraic skills which are practiced and extended through supportive questions. As you work through the book, the material gently introduces more thought-provoking ideas. As the title suggests, this book has been written for lots of people: • Year 6 pupils who have a good understanding of number will find the early chapters useful – particularly with the onset of secondary school. • Key Stage 3 pupils at secondary school who meet significantly more algebra. • GCSE pupils who want to achieve at least grade 4 • Parents who wish to support their children who may feel less confident with algebra.

Graphing Lines - Self Directed Lessons - Hyperdoc Style

This is a sequence of learning to help students gain an understanding of graphing lines in gradient-intercept form. It has been developed using the model of “Hyperdocs”. More info can be found at: https://hyperdocs.co/ To set this up with students in my classroom, I share the document with them, and I let them work through the first 2 phases independantly without any explanation from me. Then I meet with them to check their understanding during phase 3. If I am happy with their progress they can move on. Once they have made a nice drawing on Desmos, I have them take a practice test, which is supplied as a PDF, with answers. If students move through it quickly, encourage them to be more creative with their designs on Desmos. If they move slowly, have them make a more simple drawing. Please note: Students need access to a computer or iPad or even a phone. This could be done in pairs or small groups. This could be teacher directed instead. You need to create a class code for the marbleslides activity on Desmos. The final hyperlink takes students to an online revision site called Buzzmath, and students would need to make a free account. It can easily be replaced with a mymaths.co.uk link instead, or anything else you prefer. I would estimate this to take anywhere from 3 to 6 one-hour classes. It is currently aimed at year 9 students. All feedback is welcome and encouraged. I’ve shared it for free and I hope as a result you will review and suggest improvements. Enjoy!
