The questions in this particular compilation gives examples of the types of differentiation questions that have come up in IGCSE exams in the past. This includes calculations of gradients and turning points, but also includes working out velocities and accelerations by differentiating the distance-time equation. There are also a couple of examples of using differentiation within a different context, such as finding a maximum/minimum area or perimeter. I usually print these questions as an A5 booklet and issue them in class or give them out as a homework. #### Mr Surd - Problem solving with surds, find Mr Surd's area

Mr Surd is made from a number of different shapes and his dimensions are given in surd form. The task is to find his total area. This is a fantastic problem solving exercise that really engages the students with a topic that can often be a bit dull. Every class I have tried this with has loved it. It is particularly applicable to the new GCSE spec and its more problem solving approach on many questions.
