I created these randomly generating speed/mental maths worksheets in Excel for my students to practise their skills in: All values are 0-12 times table values. Hit F9 (Windows) or Fn F9 (Mac) to randomly generate a new sheet. Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division Mixed 1-Step Algebra Each worksheet generates correct solutions to match. Each worksheet is separated into: Beginner Intermediate Advanced Personally, I print off and laminate a randomly generated class set and see how many students can do in the first 5 minutes of the lesson to warm up. I keep records of their best and challenge them to beat their personal bests.

#### Where was the free kick taken from? - Photos, football and algebraic fractions

Inspired by a Numberphile video where they use still images to calculate the position of a footballer taking a free kick (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffvojZONF_A) Resource is aimed at GCSE groups (higher) and will need at least an hour. Students are given four photographs and instructions that allow them to calculate where each player was standing when they took the free kick by measuring distances on the photographs and computing cross-ratios. They then have to solve a simple algebraic fraction equation to work out the unknown distance. Included: presentation to help explain the tasks, worksheet with photographs and an additional sheet that scaffolds the process if needed, set of exemplar answers. Students can draw any straight line they like from the ball to the goal so they will have different distances in their cross ratio but should end up with the same final answers. Potentially leads to discussion opportunities about how the cross-ratio changes with the players position and even an introduction to limits as you consider what happens if the player is very close to or very far away from the penalty area. *Presentation edited to include extension tasks incorporating using trig to find the kick angle and problem solving to work out the location of a different player and flight path of a pass followed by a shot **Answers updated to include challenge 1 and 2

#### End of Term Games

This activities are aimed at key stage 3 students but could be used as revision for students who are revising for their GCSE examination. Each round consists of four questions. Print the slides 8 to 13 on A4 paper and place one printed slide per table. Students are put into pairs (either by choice or teacher selection) and are given a copy of slide 14 and a few sheets of pieces of A4 paper. The pairs are designated a starting table and the timer (slide 2) is started. The students are then given 5 minutes to answer the four questions on that table. Once the five minutes is up the students move clockwise to the next table and start the next set of four questions and the timer of slide 3 is started. This continues until all students have completed the six tables worth of questions. The answering of the questions takes no more than 30 minutes. Students then remain at their final table, swap their answer sheet with the nearest table and the answers are produced. At this stage I go through the questions before revealing the answers. In this way the students have had a go at GCSE style foundation questions and have also seen a demonstration as to how they should have been answered. Finally, students add up their score and the highest score get a prize!
